Hey guys,

So today I was shooting a wedding, and during the bride/groom portrait session, I had this single weird image. Heard about it before on POTN but don't remember exactly what caused it. Out of 1200 I shot today, this is the ONLY 1 like this.

So what caused this? Camera at fault or memory card? I'm using Sandisk Ultra 30mb/s cards. I recently just bought the 95mb/s cards and never had anything like this.

Did this happen with a new card or an old one?

"Old" card being my less than 1 year old Sandisk Ultra. I think I've taken close to 10,000 images on these cards and never once had this issue. Seems like a freak accident but not sure what caused it.

Just a messed-up shot, one out of 1200, oh well...

It could simply be that the camera was shaken when this image is being written to the card and the in-camera card reader pin lost the contact with the card, thus corrupt the image. Thus technically nothing wrong with the card. Still I recommend making a few format to the card prior to next usage.

If I was shooting something important such as a wedding, I don't think that I'd use that card again.

That's not even slightly a possibility. Canon would have some serious problems if you could corrupt an image by shaking the camera.

Are you sure the image was corrupted on writing and not just on the offload? I had a brand new card reader malfunction and corrupt 130+ images on me once. Unfortunately I had already wiped the card but it was definitely the reader in my case. Try offloading that image again and see what happens.

It's just a data error. It could be when writing to the card, reading the card , or writing data from the card. Basically it could be a problem card, card reader, cable, or even OS problem.

Format the card and choose to fix bad sectors using chkdsk (assuming windows). I wouldn't sweat it too much unless the card develops more bad sectors. If it does, throw it away.

All cards have bad sectors, it's how production runs are designed. They simply write out the bad sectors and market them as lower sizes.

^^ not necessarily a bad card but read/write errors occur
