The lens hood that comes with the lens is huge. Is there a shorter hood, Canon or 3rd party, that would work on this lens?

You might take a look at fotodiox (but in all case check the diameter of the screwing part !!)

The hood is the size it is as Canon want it to be effective. Smaller diameter vignettes, shorter lets in stray light. So any smaller and it isn't worth putting it on the lens.

i wouldn't bother with a hood particularly if u r shooting bugs, just more likely to scare them off

also if you try to increase magnification by adding extension tubes (which i do) it will just get in the way anyway

Agree, but i never use my lenses without a hood. It just feels so nude and vulnerable as i use my hood primarily as protection

Heya,

My macro lens is the only setup I don't use a lens hood on. It interrupts flash and casts shadows. I shoot a 180mm macro lens and the hood is over 4 inches long. Just a thought.

Really comes down to what you use the hood for. If it's strictly for element protection, get a short one that fits the inner diameter thread. Done. If it's for avoiding flare and stray light, then it needs to be a minimum length to be effective (hence the one they give you is the size it is, it's not an arbitrary length).

Very best,

Get the hood for the EF-S 60mm macro, it fits the 100mm perfectly and is quite a bit shorter.

Will it fit the 100L or the 100 macro? I believe the 2 are different diameters.

About $12 in Bangkok's MBK Center, same floor as the main Fotofile store on fifth floor.

Fair enough, but our world is getting smaller. He might travel there, or the info may be useful to other members in the region. Cheers.
