I pre-ordered one. f/8 AF clinched the deal. I got my 7D in Sept. 99 and, although I still love it, I will be happy to get better ISO performance and better AF. I just wish it wasn't going to take so long as it would have been nice to have the camera for my Galapagos trip the first week in November. D*** battery costs $99!

This is the first time you have a FF and a crop that share damn near identical bodies with exact button layout.

They also share the weight.

7D 810 grams
7D2 910 g
6D 770 g
5D3 950g.

I suppose my back will be able to take the extra 100 g, so I will probably get the Mark 2.

I found some answers to a few of the questions people have asked in this article (and explained below): http://mycameragear.net …non/canon-eos-7d-mark-ii/ (external link)

I don't think the sensor itself is going to be that different. The microlenses are claimed to be different, but that's all I've seen. It's the same kind of claim they would make every time they trotted out the old 18mp sensor in a new body.

It appears it is a new sensor for the 10 fps and the higher ISO.

pknight wrote in post #17156116 (external link)
B&H has posted a video, in which they go out of their way to say that this is not the same sensor as in the 70D. Any chance they know more than we do? :)

Probably, see above.

electronic shutter is completely silent, zero sound.

i bet 7d will use electronic shutter in live view and possibly in "silent" mode.

SYS wrote in post #17156181 (external link)
Can't find any information as to whether the 7DII comes with "Silent" shutter option. On BH site, it states "Electronic and Mechanical Type" in describing the shutter. For 5DIII, which comes with the silent shutter option, it states, "Mechanical Type." So what's the difference between these two?

In the same article above, it says "Canon has also included the "silent shutter" feature, also known as silent continuous shooting which will allow up to 4.0 fps in this silent mode."

So i'm assuming that it does have the silent shutter option.

See that's the dilemma of it all. While its nice to see that so many cameras are including 4K video recording these days, I certainly understand how Canon came up with the decision to not put 4K video in this camera. Aside from cannibalising their Cinema EOS cameras, for any type of indie short or film project you would need something along the lines of a computer based around a 6 core / 12 thread processor, PCIe SSDs scratch disks, and quad channel memory to fluidly edit and render projects with 4K HEVC footage shot from a high bitrate camera (i.e. not some P&S or smartphone 4K video). I'm not denying that it would have been a smart move by Canon to have included 4K video in this camera, but to be quite honest I'd bet that a lot of people complaining about the lack of 4K probably don't even have the dedicated hardware or the money to buy the hardware required to work with 4K HEVC video yet.

The life span of the 7dmk2 will be in the realm of 4yrs. 4k video is the latest craze in pushing the bells and whistles.

Having 4k and converting it to 1080 will produce improvements in video. This is the case with a panasonic gh4 anyways. Dave Dugdale's panny gh4 video compared files against the 5dmk3 and the differences in video was apparent that the gh4 was a great platform for HD video.

As I'm just starting to have fun with dslr video its easy to point out that the 7dmk2 lacks that feature. Canon is very smart in their bean counting strategy.

The occasional negativity on here makes me chuckle. Let's see: a top of the line AF system, 10 FPS, GPS, and so much more built into an intermediate priced body...what more could you possibly expect given the price? (Which is awesome BTW.)

Wifi. That is what more I could possibly expect. My GoPro has it, my phone has it, my tablet, laptop and desktop have it.

I'm reserving judgement on the sensor until I see some actual pics, but IMO leaving out wifi is just stupid.

According to a earlier poster, it was left out because of the body's material, as it wont work well with it. Quite economical to add one.

I've seen two videos where a Canon rep has said AF at f8.

And, reading the spec sheet (external link) -

Thanks Hollis, so much for a camera guru doing live webcast on new camera. Looks like he didn't have his facts correct.

I did correct Tony right at the end of his video, I have seen 2 videos in the UK one on the WEX site and the other on Park cameras and both confirm auto focus available at F8 on the centre focus point.

Derek

Thanks derek

Nah in 1999 you would have probably bought this fine camera and been stoked with 4.5fps (or 7fps with battery grip) and a 24 or 26 frame buffer, depending on which film you bought:

September of 1999? You were ahead of use by a decade! How did you do it? ;)
