Official announcement is here but price is a bit high at $599.00

Given the 24-105 f/4 IS is readily available at the same price, is there a market for non-video users?

Heya,

Street price will have to be closer to $300~400 for this to ever be worth while to anyone. Seeing as the market is full of $600 24-105F4L's. Seems to me that the 24-105 STM is just filling a niche for video people. But I just don't understand the whole dSLR as a "video" platform when there's better. I guess it's just a way to "dabble" with video.

I have zero interest in this lens.

I wonder if it's 24mm performance will mimic the L version.

I'll probably buy the EF-S 24mm prime though. As much as I don't want to buy an EF-S lens, it will live on APS-C bodies for my lady & her sister for shooting kids playing. I already have the 40 and I like it's performance, but for indoor stuff and up close stuff, a 24mm on APS-C will be beneficial. $150 as the new price means I should get one used for $100 which is probably worth it. I like the idea of a smaller, fastish, wide prime on APS-C for general shots of kids and when walking around in parks and stuff. I won't use it. But the girls will.

Very best,

I was alittle turned off by the 599 price as well. I was hoping it be alittle less, I would trade in my 28-135 for that lens, which I might do anyway.

They are not anything to write home about. Above average, but nothing that says wow.

The $600 24-105L flood is because of that being the kit lens in the 6D, right? Could Canon be looking to swap the kit lens over to this to better preserve the 24-105L's margins?

Speak for yourself. I got mine for $475 and I've seen a bunch for 500-550.

It's been a kit lens on the 5D series as well. So there are a gozillion of them out there getting old. Like mine.

As a full framer, may be the new 24-105 is designed as competition for the Sigma f/4 version which lists for $899 rather than the Canon f/4 at $1,149.

Not everyone is willing to buy used or white box etc.

If you need to shoot video with AF, do we have a choice? STM is the way to go with video, right?

STM is good for silent focusing, but as far as on the 70D USM works just as well...just a little noisier...i'd imagine if you had an external mic mounted on to the hot shoe though, you probably wouldn't hear it

either way, at $600 they're not going to sell many of these

"market is full of" and "I got mine for" are totally different animals. If I was selling a 24-105 I'd want ~$600, but I wouldn't pay over $500 myself

I don't think any lenses have street prices close to their MSRPs except the super cheap and super expensive

meh...if you look at every single lens on B&H right now, and compare it to the MSRP at canonusa...they are exactly the same

yeah, there are periods where one can get a lens cheaper through rebates and such...but for the most part throught out the year, they are going to be right at the MSRP...if it were a sigma MSRP, i'd agree with you
