Possibly a juv bird (still some green showing on the back) plus frozen conditions meant this bird was hunting in a unfrozen drainage canal a few feet wide. My Photography Home Page

In fact i would swap my snowy owl opportunity for an eagle one at this stage (just temporarily though!) Thank you. I'd gladly make that trade temporarily, I've never seen a Snowy in the wild, although one day in a treestand hunting late season deer here in SE Iowa, I swear I saw one fly past but it could have been that I had them on my mind as I was probably on my phone looking at POTN in my Heater Body Suit. 6D & 7D mark II - Canon 16-35 f/4 IS L, Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L, Canon 24-105 f/4 L IS, Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II L, Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS II, Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon 85 f/1.8, Canon 100 f/2.8 USM macro, Canon EF 1.4x III

I think the situation was fairly unique. Possibly a juv bird (still some green showing on the back) plus frozen conditions meant this bird was hunting in a unfrozen drainage canal a few feet wide. Most shots tended to be against the light however. I call that " breakup ",... A time when the ice is on and small holes are left for the critters to use as the only hunting holes. It is most affective here in the spring, I think because the animals have been cooped up all winter not having there water access. I have found at this time they are very brave and mammals and feather friend alike. its a great time to get closer to the wildlife you can't get close to at any other season of the year. I have many a great image I would not have gotten had it not been breakup. We do have times where the conditions work out the same and leave holes in the ice but I find they are less productive than in the transition from winter to spring. Great opportunity Lester, they are quit the colourful bird. Ours are very drab in comparison. Jeff ........, 7D, 70-300L, 100-400LII
