I like Red!
Incredibly perfect dof placement provide the perfect detail of face and fading softness by the time you get to back of head/neck.

Was that his expression for you that meant- "you are too close, I can smell your breath?"

(If this wasn't a crop, at 320mm it would mean that you wee like 8ft away.)

Good question,... Really I don't think any fur bearing animal is really red... But there orange. Birds on the other hand can be red.

It is a crop Guy, but 8 feet ..me ... and wild game is a regular thing. Honestly they find me quite boring. and I them most of the time. With a good working camera this depth of field is easy to get. But a camera that is not working at 150% is not going to get it. I pull the focus from there ear's down there face trying not to get the nose right on, leaves the eye slightly out. and I hate that lol

Colin
Please give us some background to the circumstances where you capture these incredible shots
Is there a spot that you regularly frequent that you can consistently find the owls ? How many are there in that territory ? How long do you have to wait to get one ? Do you sit and wait for them or walk around scouting them out ? Are there other photogs. in the same territory that you are in ? etc

In the English language orange was not a colour until the 16th century (named after the fruit). Before that red referred to any colour in the reddish part of the spectrum, including orange and brown; hence red fox, deer, squirrel, kite and robin redbreast.

Thanks for the kind comments Greg
The owls come in to farlington marshes for the winter from about october till march (this year there are 3 last there were 5 )
The marshes is not very big to walk round it on the sea wall is about 4 miles its all flat land comprising of grass reeds and water
the owls mostly stay in the top field they sleep on the ground in the grass at night and hunt in the day
there can be lots of potogs standing around but most don't last my usual 7 to 8hrs on a sat or sun or both (or most of my xmas break :-D)
They tend to fly up for about 5 to 10mins at a time every few hours and come near enough a few times in that 10mins
