Wow, great shot! Is that a single exposure or did you focus stack?

digital paradise wrote in post #18261395 (external link)
Nice. That is one lens I regret selling but after my macro phase was over it did not get much use. Even great for non macro. I used to say it was so sharp I had to keep bandaids in the camera bag.

Thanks for all the comments and “Likes” folks, I appreciate them.:-)

@Mark – that was a single shot, it was an awkward working space and too windy to attempt a stack.

@digital paradise – I previously used the canon 100mm F2.8 and since acquiring the "L" version, although both lenses are incredibly sharp, I find that I can push the “L” lens data a little harder.

Cheers

Dennis

I love it when they are little and they bounce/fly as much as they run.

It reminds me that I need to take some updated shots of my own dog. These three were from about a week after we rescued him, and he has doubled in size in the 6 months we have had him. Like UK_Mark said, they really do grow quick when they are young. The second one was taken just as the wind blew and we joke he was simply "getting ready for takeoff".

You have to stand next to them to appreciate how huge they are.

My wife's family where prairie folk. Lived in Saskatchewan and Manitoba for many years. Now when one of her sisters who lives in Ontario comes to visit we have to go for a drive and find a few for her.

Here are some more wasps from our front garden. The single wasp looked as if it had collided with a spider’s web and appeared to be resting on the edge of a leaf after escaping, with silk threads hanging off its wings and legs.

Meanwhile, nearby, the other colony of wasps continues with their nest building activities and don’t mind the 100mm macro poking in!:-)

Cheers

Dennis

Dennis,
I am not experienced in Macro. Out of curiousity, approximately what distance are you from these wasps, and don't you run into dof issues being too small from 100mm and distance? Or are you focus stacking or something else?

Thank you for all the comments and “Likes” folks, I appreciate them.:-)

@Doc G – the lighting on these was from a Canon 600 EX Speedlite fitted with a Lastolite Ezybox Speed-Lite 2 Softbox to provide a soft, overhead illumination.

@gschlact – the Canon 100mm F2.8 L macro lens is a 1:1 lens. That is, when at the lens closest focusing distance of 30cms (from the sensor), a 1cm object will record as a 1cm image on the sensor. From memory, the front of the lens was some 4 to 5 inches from the wasps.

And yes, the DOF is very shallow so where possible, I try to keep the body of the insect parallel to the sensor so that most of the insect is in focus.

Cheers

Dennis

Thanks mate, they're all proper little dogs now, almost 8 times the weight they were born after 7 weeks!
