Most of the dog photos I clicked to view on this photographers site were taken with an 85mm and likely a Canon 85 f1.8. In my opinion, the quality of these images stands out due to great lighting and proper post processing. Many of the lenses in your signature are more than adequate to obtain the same results he is getting. Also, it is unlikely that a full frame camera is going to look better than a crop when viewed at the resolution allowed by 500px.

There seem to be a lot over 85mm, I just feel I dont get quite as clean looking image as his. I understand net size is always going to be decieving but its just something about the look he is achieving Id like to get out of my 7DII, I can get it out of my 5DIII but 7DII not so sure

I can relate to this.
I'm not sure if it was in this thread or not, but a couple weeks ago, Jeff described a "love/hate" relationship with the 7dii. That's exactly how I feel. Sometimes I love what I get out of it, and some days I feel like chucking it in the trash !
I usually put it off as user error, but I've even had mixed results from one hour to the next. It's hard to quantify, but sometimes I love my results, sometimes I hate them....absolute garbage !
From the group of people that I shoot with, I honestly feel Nikon d500 is the best camera on the market right now. I'm really hopeful that the 7diii out paces it.

Got friends with D500 with similar issues, Im sure its more about the crop sensor and finding a lens that it loves, I notice I get way better shots out of primes

Had my finger on the D500 checkout button all black friday weekend. The Nikon 200-500 AF was just too painfully slow when I tested it at the store. Mixed reviews about their 80-400. I just could not give up my 100-400 II. Nikon can't touch it. Looking at at 400 DO II one day. Got a 5D4 instead. Very happy with that decision.

Not that I'm struggling with my 7D2. The opposite. I got lucky sending it in twice and Canon did a good job tuning it. I had a brief struggle with Canon not putting a dedicated AF processor into their top crop. I'd pay more for that. I want to hear what the IDX and 1DX II owners say. It never misses. Maybe the 7D3.

Interesting to note a very short DOF on these shots at F/7.1, were you very close to the bird? How close?

2 metres. They were sat on the bottom rung of a bridge rail overlooking water. I think they were fledglings too tired to move as there was a swarm of them hunting over the water

FINALLY, I made my 7D2 vs. 5D4 vs. 5DSr decision.

Picked up a 2nd 7D2 body off he FM Buy/Sell section today. I thought long and hard about the 5DSr but at the end of the day, my current 7D2 has been a stellar performer and I didn't see the need to pay 3X for a 5DSr or a 5D4.

So, now, I will be rocking the 100-400II on one 7D2 body and the 500/4 II on the other. That is, unless i move up from a 500/4 II to a 600/4 II. Help, somebody, talk me out of it! :D

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.
