Math is off a little. Cropping by 1.6X to the side on the 5D4 will give you 11.7M pixels on the same subject that the 7D2 can put 20M pixels on. Remember, you have to divide by 1.6x1.6 = 2.56. If you had a 5DSr on the other hand, what you say is going to be true.

I have to agree, my bad. I don't know why I did that (I am usually good at math) - I somehow decided that the 1.6 factor was the area, not a linear dimension.

No worries, happens to the best of us, and when we go astray, we have POTN to set us straight!

By the way, if you also wanted to compare both at 20mega pixels, I think the 5d4 comes out to be about 1.22x vs the 7d2 1.6x of a full frame.

For the 11.6mp vs 20mp, the 7dii will give you about 31% more linear pixels in the field of view.

From my reading, in reach-limited situations, the answer is clearly the 7D2. If it were otherwise, it would give me the necessary incentive to buy the 5D4.

from everything Ive seen the 5D4 is a beautiful camera but for wildlife with heavy cropping it wont beat the 7DII and with the 5DS you will get the same image as 7DII but lack of speed. makes sense to have both full frame and crop to me

I have never used the 5D4, but naturally am interested in this new body. I am seriously looking for an excuse to get into FF. I thought, maybe the 5D4 is it! But hopes were dashed after reading several reviews. (I mainly shoot critters near and far, and never print anything.)

I have both and use both for critters and birds in flight ( among other things). They both work well. I usually carry both and keep different lenses on them so I don't have to switch out.

Assuming there was no visible motion in the shot captured, and not at a high ISO, 7dii at pixel level will be sharper with more detail. I doubt you would see a difference at that print size though. (IE a 11 model camera should print quite nicely at that size with over 200ppi.
