While the infocus portions of the face will be decided by your distance to the face, stopping down will greatly deepen your field of seemingly in focus as you know. One can watch the focus move in and out making the face sharp or at least thats what I am dong. I'm conscious of the in focus portion of the face not just where the view finder tells me the focus point is. I guess is the best way I can describe how I shoot wildlife. and if their not looking at me then the off side is going to be just outside of dead on. thats were infield MFA or simply moving your focus forward or back just for a particular shoot or subject is very useful.
