Is it just me? It seems like this thread has really come to life since the EOS R thread started. I can hardly keep up with both. So, what is the connection? Did the 'R' thread start the self destruct timer on the 7D2 or something?

Rod

I have browsed the R thread because I'm interested in new gear and technology, but have no intention of buying the R, because it is full frame. I'm potentially interested in mirrorless, but until they come out with a crop version with pro features, I will wait. Just speaking for myself. :-)

When the 7D2 came out it was often referred to as a 1DX junior. What was the 7D2 lacking vs the 1DX, would you say, when it was released and vs now?

The 7D2 is fine. I never did a detailed comparison to the FF models. For wildlife we need pixel density. The 7D2 has that, plus great AF.

Today the 77D and 80D have more pixel density giving a bit more reach. A 400mm becomes a 440mm equiv lens. It puts the 7D2 sensor at a bit of a disadvantage, and is a reason we need a 7D3, or an advanced mirrorless crop body. A 50mp mirrorless FF that has a crop option would also be interesting.

I prefer the IQ of my 5D4 compared to my 7D2 but if I had to shoot with the 7D2 I would have no issues with that. It does have great AF and I have no IQ complaints. The 5D4 crops better but lacks a few extra FPS. It can use all AF points at F8 so I tend to use it more often with TC's than the 7D2. Too many fun focusing options to play with.

I am awaiting for some announcement about a 7D3 or whatever Canon will call the new crop flagship and see if it will get 1DX II AF or better to compete with the D500. If not I'll probably sell a body and a lens to get a 1DX II.

I like your thinking DP. I'm considering the same options.

I could get one hell of a setup for the price of a 1DX Mark II, just one more reason I'm switching to Nikon. D500 + 200-500mm f/5.6 for less than $3k and I'd still have money left over...maybe put it towards the grip since that's a chunk of change just by itself.

My only qualm with that is having two totally different cameras. I often times go for periods of time without doing any photography, and I find it difficult to switch back and forth between two totally different cameras. I think it's an old man thing, but I find it tough to do. I'm still hoping that the 7DIII (whenever it finally come out) offers many of the things I'm looking for.

I have invested a lot of time, money and years into Canon. I tried the D500 and it was very nice but I don't suffer posting images at sites with my Canon gear. I decided to stay with Canon and I think there are are going to be a lot of changes coming down the pipe I think so I'm glad I didn't.

The main reason and not a very good one as I got a 400 DO and 2X for wildlife, primary stills. IQ is awesome with the 2X. The 500 and 600 are to heavy for me and the new 600 III which is 3 lbs lighter and I'd love to have but will be only $18,000 CND. :-( They don't give the 500 and 600's away either.

I didn't think I'd be doing any BIF but I'm having fun at 800mm and I got the bug. Only problem is those bodies suffer lag with the 2X. The 1.4 is fine. That is why I've decided to wait for the 7D3 as I'd prefer to do this for $4000 less. Although I'd like a 1DX II I don't really need it. I don't need 16 FPS as well as either which also drives the cost up but I'm sure I'd adjust to it :-) Winters coming and birding literally goes south so I'm going to wait a while.

As for my 7D2. There is no way it can do this. 5D4 crop from bottom left hand corner.

DP...It sure seems like there are a lot of us waiting for the 7DIII, and keeping our fingers crossed that it's the crop sensor camera that beats them all. I surely want it to come out soon. Like you and so many others, I feel that the 1DX II would sure be nice, but what a price to pay!! It's also pretty heavy, and giving up the 1.6 crop factor would be tough to do. I guess we'll all have to just sit and wait.

Yes there are. I think at this point it is better to wait it out.

I agree with you. I'm reluctant to switch because I'd have to learn a new camera. That takes time.

In the back of my mind I'm also thinking, is my photography really going to improve if I switch to Sony or Nikon? The answer is, probably not much.
