Teamspeed long ago convinced me that it was indeed ok to use higher iso when we were shooting 7D. This image is always a good example of how good it can do. ISO 12800
Straight out of camera standard jpg just resized to post

I like ya a lot Sid.. I mean you live 135 miles from where my mother was born... but you and I will never agree on this one.. lol I think there are as many views on this subject as there are people. I work extremely hard in the fight against sensor noise and will never give up the fight.. lol

It will be many years before you will see me go anywhere close to those iso's in wildlife photography.

Its Thanksgiving in Canada and I'm thankful for less noise in the future

I know I know, in an ideal world an all but I'm not getting stressed about it and like you I really am looking forward to better noise control with the 7DIII but I'm not holding my breath for that much difference. ISO 2500

The sad truth is most of my fav's are dead now... The general population found and destroyed them. Some had good intentions but a complete lack of knowledge.

Others simply had the funds to buy the gear and look like wildlife photographers...

If I could go back in time I would steal them away from their hiding place to a world far away from the worlds eye.

Momma mallard is the 2nd from the right, and closest to the viewers. She has successfully reared 8 young which will soon be getting their adult plumage. So, not counting momma, how many of the young will be drakes and how many will be hens?

Its rare to see me shooting that fast.. I probably would have been more like this one at 1/640. This is dead of winter on an ice storm day... almost no light at all. And you can see I left it that dark... Today I would just raise it up to make it look like normal day light.

Fur is something different altogether... keeping the texture and noise down between the hairs in the fur can be challenging shooting in dark places where the critters live. especially under chin's and bellies. Its easy to make it look clumpy and blocky if your peepin ... which I do.

I also dont like the tiny burnt bits of the white that high iso will give us on anything with white on a dark bird or animal.

Just curious to know what would be your highest comfortable ISO that you use on 7DII , I always thought 3200 was ok but watching a bunch of stuff on utube by wildlife photographers I notice many refuse to go go higher than ISO 800 or at the higher end ISO 1600. They claim loss of detail and too much noise on crop sensors. I always felt it was more about not under exposing and trying to pull out shadows that was more the issue. Now Im curious what others think

I have no issues going to ISO 3200 on the 7D2 if that's what it takes to get the shot. If it's a static shot, I'd drop ISO (setup: press set button and spin large dial to quickly change ISO without moving my eye from the camera) and sacrifice some shutter speed to get the shot especially if on a tripod. If handheld, I'd keep ISO higher for a minimum level of shutter speed (using 600II f4 lens). If shutter speed drops really low, I'd do a 4-6 shot burst to make sure I get a sharp image. I use Topaz Denoise whenever necessary to remove noise and this software preserves detail. With that said, I typically am at ISO 800 or 1600 when out shooting in daylight because I want that high shutter speed.

Note: If you print the image, you most likely won't even notice high ISO noise.

While I like the 55-250 STM for its light weight, I've been finding the AF reliability also in line with the cheap price I paid lol

(Edit: I forget if I attempted an AF microadjustment with this lens so I will do that)

Think I will look at the new EF 70-300 II IS USM for next year when lugging the Sigma is undesirable...

That fox looks like he's up to no good. I guess being sly as a fox.
