So far I'm loving my 7d ii, it's a beast. I've gotten use to letting my 6d auto iso all the way up to 6400, but it's a bit rough on the 7d ii, ETTR 1/3 of a stop helps a lot with the noise but I just need more light since most of my shooting hours are dusk/dawn-ish.

Any recommendation for 'budget' ($1K-$2K USD used) fast long lenses? Preferably 400mm+ and f/5.6 or faster. Is the Canon 400mm f/5.6 decent? Is the 100-400 ii better?

100-400II. As sharp or sharper than the prime, better in every other way, AND zooms.

Get the 100-400 Mk2, you won't regret it. Also works well with 1.4X extender on the 7D2.

I was in a similar boat as you. Torn between the 150-600 zooms, the 400 f/5.6L prime, and the 100-400 II. Went for the 100-400 II and haven't regretted that decision. Its sharp, focuses fast and accurately, built like a tank, the IS is rated to 4 stops, and since it has a short MFD and is a zoom, it is very versatile. I use mine for macro, wildlife, and landscapes on my 7D2.
