A couple more ptarmigan shots. These were taken January 27, so a week ago. Only minor cropping done other than the resizing for posting. Probably the same birds in both shots. They walk a lot faster than I do.

They certainly blend with the landscape
That second one realy highlights that.
Very nice :-)

All nice but I really like the second one. I've tried for that effect many times. Unfortunately what I see is not how it is rendered on the computer screen. My captures are always flat and lifeless. Not what I saw at all. I'll just have to keep trying.

Another ptarmigan taken on Monday (Feb 14)

Set exposure to spot to see if it works better. Seems to. This is closer to what you see with the naked eye. The birds are white but not the same white as the snow. I think the snow reflects more UV than the birds hence the difference. This a fairly large crop.

Still going through the shots.

Last ptarmigan for today, I promise :-) but still sorting.
Again, taken Monday. This one shows the black bars on the tail. They're only visible when the tail is spread out. Only resized for posting.

Finished going through the ptarmigan shots. The ptarmigan numbers, like most wildlife, are cyclic. I don't know where we are in that cycle. There might be more birds next year or fewer. Usually see very few. I intend to take advantage of the photo opportunities while they last. Couple more below. Only resized for posting.
