Snowberry clearwing moth

Great job !

For the longest time, I thought these were some sore of stinging bee.

The ones I have been seeing and photographing don't have the reddish coloring; I haven't yet processed any of the images; maybe the reds will show up when I process them --- but I don't remember seeing it on the actual creatures.

At least around here, I didn't see any until mid-July and they disappeared by mid-August.

Now, about the extension tube --- I am assuming Manual Focus only, right ?

Thanks, BuckSkin.

It's also interesting that these moths can vary in size greatly at the same point in time. I understand you thinking they were bees as some are quite small. Yet right next to them might be a "giant" one (shrimp sized lol).

The auto extension tubes not only retain AF but AE and lens stabilization as well. I use a kenko set like this one:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com …o_Extension_Tube_Set.html (external link)

I routinely use them stacked but the 36mm is my most used solo tube (mostly since I use longer focal length lens with these). I have noticed that the stabilization can become a bit unstable if I use all 3 tubes together.

Thanks for that link and info about the AF.

I have THIS (external link) poor man's set of tubes (plus another really poor man's set); reading your reply prompted me to put my lens back on AF and check them out.

I had first decided that AF was not very dependable with my set; however, if I get the distance within focusable territory, they can and do autofocus quite well.

I had all three tubes plus a +4 diopter/close-up filter installed and could autofocus quite satisfactorily.

I was practicing on a card with some pretty small text on the desk in front of me.

I haven't yet tried it out on moving targets; but, your photos are proof that it can be done.

Having fun in the backyard:

Sitting in my garage on a ladder, shooting through an open doorway, having coffee, while still in my PJs ...

... it doesn't get any better than that!

The look a Red-tailed hawk gets when it locks on to a chipmunk at 50 yards.

The results:
RTH 1-0
Chipmunk 0-1
