I'll be getting my Sigma 18-35 today hopefully and got my 7DM2 delivered yesterday. I'll have to get reused to canons layout after shooting with a D810 the last few months. It's a little shorter than the D810, which fit like a glove in my hand while the M2 is a little shorter but I'll get used to it.

You'll love the combo, although, if your 18-35 is anything like mine, you'll need to MA it with the dock (16 values to enter). Mine was all over the place from -20 to +20 so I am sending it off the Gentec (Canadian repair center in Ontario) along with my 7D II to let them do the calibrating. It's a wonderful lens when it works though ;)

Yeah I've heard that optically it's incredible, but it's pretty picky about focus.

Has anyone use this body with 400mm f/5.6 and 1.4x? The reason I asked is because I started saving money for the EF500mm f/4.0L IS USM Mk1. I could have this body and EF400mm f/5.6 for a little bit more than half the price of 1 used EF500mm. I have the Tamron 150-600mm which I really like and adding 400mm f/5.6 for BIF would be a nice combo. IMO

Or should I continue save money for the EF500mm. I never use CC in all my camera gear because this is just a hobby and don't want to end up owing a lot of money that is why I save for each lens I want 1 at a time.

Julian and Butch and anyone I need your advise :).

Ive used it with my 400 5.6 + Kenko 1.4 a few times now and it works great. The AF remains pretty quick and accurate but you are limited to the center point only plus 4pt expansion around that point.

Case 4 is good for football. I used that for both a 7DII and 1Dx and the AF performance was solid. The only thing is you might want to adjust the tracking sensitivity. I dropped it a notch (toward locked on) and it held the subject a little better.

Hey Peter... Is there a reason your Tammy doesn't fulfill any of your birding needs? Or did you need a long prime for any other reason?

:)

Hi Butch it does but I always wanted that lens (500mm) I bought the 300mm f4L IS and still want it after I got the 300mm then I bought the Tamron and still wanting that lens. I am afraid that if I buy another lens like the 400mm f5.6 I will still want it.

1 of the reason I really like 500mm is instead of having to carry more than one lens in my bag or with me I will just have to bring the ef500mm plus of course the IQ and by adding the 1.4x or 2.0x will really give me a great reach and also I can have 1 lens for BIF and static subjects.

I've been using Peter Read Miller's (external link) settings for his 1Dx as far as Cases are concerned. However, lately I don't place emphasis on specific Cases anymore. I just start with Case 4 and tweak/customize to my liking. I place "tracking, accel/decel and AF point switching" in the "my folder" and tweak accordingly, so basically my Cases, if you will, are customized. One thing I will say is that for football, you want tracking setting at least to -1 and most likely -2 (setting I use on 1D4) to keep the focus on the target longer. I also have focus as the priority for both 1st and 2nd shot. Also, I now enable "[AF] Lens drive when AF impossible" something I did not do with the 1D bodies and see that when disabled and AF was not possible the bird was out of focus, but since activating it, I got more focused images. I am still in the "testing" mode and have a game this weekend to see how my tweaks work on larger targets.

The part that seems to be missing here, though, and forgive me if it's known and I just missed it, is that the Cases are not simply different combinations of tracking, accel/decel and AF point switching....each Case uses a different, underlying algorithm for how it predicts/anticipates focus. So, those three things are modifiers for each Case, but the underlying math is actually different.
