Agreed and I'm coming from a 7D. I can already see that it runs circles around the 7D for AF.

Same here. You definitely can not think of AF on the 7D2 the same as you did on the 7D.

Paul- thanks for the explanation. I was confused thinking you expected 7dii to somehow need higher iso thank your 5diii in same situations, alas you meant different uses at the same wedding. :D
Seems like all your reasoning is in line AND the 7dii is delivering as promised- cleaner high ISo, AF tracking, high fps, high quality images.

Guy,

There are situations in dark wedding facilities where I stop at 3200 (never use higer on a 5d3 for quality) and just deal with whatever shutter speed I have to use - but there are often times when I know I could have used a 1Dx type fps and faster shutter speed and get better low light as well. I have been torn about switching over to 1Dxs for weddings and giving up the 5D3 but there are many things that hold be back - the size, the sound of the thing at that speed, the loss of megapixels in other situations, etc. I have been playing with the idea of adding a Sony A7s for just this situation (low light) but I tried out the camera extensively with many lens at my local Henry's here in Toronto, and the 12 megapixel density just does not work when you create crops - just NOT sharp - I tried every lens in the book - that camera while apparently good in low light is NOT sharp when cropped as it runs out of megapixels.

So that led me back to the 1Dx again but when the 7D2 came out, there was a few things that in theory attracted me to the camera:
1) 10fps and it is near silent
2) ergonomically it is exactly a 5D3 so I can not think when using it (this is important to me)
3) I can see a situation where I want to fire off very fast fps, in this situation I think I can live with jpegs (never otherwise), and if the camera is ok at the 5D3s 3200 in raw (which it is close) then I can maybe live with 6400, 8000, 10000 with noise reduction.

- If the 5D had a bigger buffer it would be perfect
- If the 5D had 2 modes (low light 18 megapixel, good light, 36 megapixel) it would be perfect
- If the 5D had 10fps quiet like the 7D2 it would be perfect

Unfortunately I really want a few different thing and I know the 7D2 addresses a few of them - I just don't know yet if it is worth the hassle of carrying a 3rd body (I doubt it but I needed a sports camera as well.

The last few days I have shot a hockey game and a team work out session in a dark gym - the 7D is perfect in these situations:
- 10fps (not sure my 800x card is fast enough for a Raw / Jpeg mixture - need to do more testing)
- good pixel density / reach with a 70-200 for hockey game
- used the 18-35 Sigma 1.8 @ 1.8 and 10fps, 1/1000 and ISO 10,000 on (Raw, Jpeg) and captured multiple running jumping tracking bursts that I was happy with
- the last point is exactly what I was looking to test out - i.e. in a wedding, can I fire off a freeze the action 20 frames in a few seconds in low light (IF I NEED TO) - this camera will do it, it is comfortable in my hands (with sharpening, noise reduction) ISO 10,000 can work (in these situations)

here is a 1/1000 ISO 10,000 shot (I was capturing 6++ shot sequences) and tracking them running in (AI Servo mode 2 with some tweaks) @ F1.8 on my Sigma 18-35 and I was getting 70%+ hit rate - not that this is wedding stuff but this is kinda what I want for a low light action sequence at a wedding and I think this camera and the Sigma 18-35 1.8 would do the job

Looks like the MFA is much better dialed in. Most of your shots have a centered (front back) focal plane Witt the subject in the middle.
Very nice shots. Hopefully you won't have to second guess the camera any more.
Enjoy.

After using cases that better fit the shots I was taking as found and reported out by Snydermark along with getting MFA dialed in I am getting sharper shots and more of them. Still some adjustments to be made in shooting style, ss and aperture I think. I believe I am going to bump up the aperture to f/8 when using my 100-400L thanks to the better noise handling of the camera.

2000 ISO- Love it. Im finding 3200 ISO extremely doable and even 6400 is great with enough light

I took these photos a week ago at Bosque del Apache. I believe they show the effectiveness of Case 2 AF setting in AI Servo. The two images were taken only .1 sec apart:

Even though the blackbirds passed by, closer to the camera, the focus remained with the cranes. I was shooting center point expansion, AI Servo, Case 2. Of course, to be fair, the cranes are much bigger targets than the blackbirds.

I fear that the complexity of the controls on this camera may be far above my current pay grade. That 10fps is addictive and the focus speed is way quicker than my 50D. I took over 2000 photos in a day and a half at Bosque. Still sorting them out. Lots of fun, sunrise to sunset. A bucket list trip for me.

Backyard birds have been pretty scarce today, but I did catch this guy flying over. Shot with ef70-200mm f/4L IS at 200mm, ISO 100, 1/800 sec., f/4, Case 1 AF, high-speed continuous shooting. 100% crop and overall frame. I think the halo in the 100% view is probably a sharpening artifact (I left it on LR's default 25% sharpening strength, I still haven't done enough with 7DII RAW files to figure out what the optimum sharpening will be). Also, for some reason I'm not getting EXIF data when I save 7DII images from LR 5.7; has anyone else noticed this or have a fix (my LR export settings specify including all EXIF data, but it's not working for some unknown reason).
EDIT: I just posted something else and the EXIF data is showing, so I have no idea why it doesn't show for these uploads but does for the ones I just did.
