This would have been a much tougher shot with the 7D since it was slower to lock on.

Brad,
I do a lot of middle school gyms as well with similar lighting.
Would you mind sharing the original file for this shot for me to have a better look?
Did you shoot jpg or raw, what NR or post processing already done?

This is the original file minus a little crop. Shot .jpg, it was probably auto-toned on upload, no other pp.

Trust me, this is the worst lit middle school gym I've ever shot in. I've been in barns with more light.

It might be the original file with little crop, but it is significantly resized here on the web. Can you point us to a link to the full size jpg to have a look?

I love the camera, and I haven't even had it for a full week.

Can you do a conversion to DNG with Adobe's DNG Converter (external link) and then edit the DNG files with Aperture?

Thank's Tom. Don't think I can use it, looking at it I think it needs windows system for downloading it to, and I don't have that on my computer.

I don't think the case matters when you go in and adjust the settings. I think each case is just a different preset of the 3 tracking variables. I lower all three to their lowest. I happened to do it on case 1 but I think you could do it under any case and the outcome would be the same.

I thought the same, but someone here stated that they talked to Canon and was told that each has different algorithm. I can't confirm this, but that's what the poster stated. I start with case 4 and and just changed tracking to -2 and it's working for me. I set the 1D4 and 1D3 to -2 also, so it was natural to set The II to -2 also.

This is the initial assumption being made; it's the same one that I had made. However, we had a local expo the first week on November where Canon's West Coast regional representative, Genaro Arroyo, did a "Getting to know your new 7D MkII" presentation. When I asked him that exact question he said that no, each Case actually uses a totally different algorithm.

Case 1 is the tried and true, standard that we've all been using for Servo in previous bodies, but 2 - 4 actually calculate things differently because servo is doing some predictive calculations based on direction and speed of your subjects in order to maintain focus. The 3 variables are just that, but they are acting on different math in each case.

So far this has been a much tougher camera for me to get sharp pictures out of, compared to the 5D3. I'm on my 2nd copy, and even this one required a lot of AFMA and fiddling with the settings. I'm still not 100% sure the camera is ok: I.e. when the contrast is low, it tends to miss focus a lot. But at least in good light it's getting there. Here are a few shots with the 400/5.6, at f/5.6. Shot in JPEG (I haven't started my RAW workflow yet while I'm fiddling with the camera).

That sounds exactly like my 7D. :(

I'm still struggling with birds in flight at semi high ISOs like 1600. I'm guessing it's my Case settings since I am getting good results in AI Servo with stationary birds. I'll be trying some more tomorrow.... but that will be it for a while. I start working 6 days a week Saturday. That will continue until January so my time will be limited.

This is just to show the AF not switching to an object in the path your are panning over. This was pretty large object, and it still did not grab the focus. Otherwise, yes its a crap photo.

It could be the tracking set-up as you mention, but what focus points are you using for BIF? Did you read and follow this article? : http://learn.usa.canon.com …elligent_viewfinder.shtml (external link)
