My first owl in the USA and on this one I used LR to tidy up a bit but I'm doing these on the laptop and that doesn't always translate into a decent presentation so please let me know if this pic or the Snail Kite look OK.

Nice shot, too bad you had so much trouble with it.

I am really liking the 18-135 STM. Really useful focal range. I hate not using my 17-55 as much, but it seems to be kind of iffy on focus lately whereas the 18-135 is dead on all the time. Dunno if it is worth sending the 17-55 in for a calibration check or what, my 50 1.4 is consistent focus so I don't think it is a wider aperture weirdness or anything. Might just be me, but it seems like it needs a heavy MFA (+5/+10) in the lower incandescent lights of my basement but in brighter more natural light it doesn't need as much. very odd.

I really wish the weather was better here so I could get outside and try to get some BIF or other targets to really run the AF hard on my copy to test it out.

Send it in to Canon NJ for AF adjustment instead of play Russian Roulette with trading in for a new one. They will make the AF adjustments. Then when you get it back do the mAF for each of your lenses.

Thanks but with the second copy giving the same focusing issues with a variety of lenses, its going back. I'm tired of wanting to try out a third copy. MFA won't work since the focusing was back/ front, depending on the situation. Canon will not acknowledge the issues and if they send it back with all-ok; I will then be stuck with an expensive camera. I'm staying with the 5D3

I can understand. Although mine was ok, I sent mine in just to be sure (thanks to Big Country being the trailblazer on this) and they made some AF adjustment as they noted AF discrepancies. This was confirmed as my 600 needed about 45% less fine tune adjustment with Dot AF tune. I knew if they made adjustments it would be better. The camera just needs to be individually touched by Canon as I see it. I was willing to take the risk, betting that the reward would be 10 fold and so far so good. I think those willing to take that risk, too, will be equally as happy.

As a side note, I had AF issues with the 1D3 (well known issue of course) and the 1D4 and once Canon made their adjustments, the "within specs parameters" were made tighter therefore the lenses even sharper. I knew that if they could get the 1D3 AF right, they could do the same for the 7D2.

The 5D3 is definitely an AF beast and makes stunning images. If they make this a 10 fps body, I will be all over it.

like the Everglades Snail Kite.
His rates are very reasonable and he knows every bird in that area, not only the bird but the habits that will lead you to image capture.
He also guides (for many years) bonefishing. Besides that he's great to be around. I asked for a caracara (my secondary goal of this trip
post the owl) and he put me on track-
