I have a similar shot with my 7D and I used my 300 with a Canon 2X and Sigma 2X but could not get it quite as crisp. Using two converters did not help. Pretty good for hand held. My 7D2 was shipped today.

Moon phase, air temp, location of moon in sky, elevation, light pollution, humidity, haze, air glow pollution (can happen anywhere), thermal refraction, etc. That's a lot of variables to make any conclusion between moon shots!
