It looks like you may be shooting in TV mode or something funky pushing your aperture to large f-stop. Likely over f11 starts to hinder sharpness. Pay attention to exposures prior to shutter. Add EC as necessary and or try other AE choices.

Had decent light yesterday, not too many sharp ones lol. Diffidently different going back to crop and shooting with 600mm.

We interrupt the nice bird photos with some photos from a track meet. But this girl can fly. She waited until everybody else finished then won the meet with her first vault at the height the other girls couldn't go over. Then she tried for the meet record three times but missed.

Still wintery here with a few inches yesterday. No cropping and very little post processing out of the 300mm f2.8L IS + 1.4TC.

Doc

Very nice. Number 2 is pretty unique underlit with no flash. From the Mats? Curious on your focus technique for the first shot. Did you follow the athlete all the way from run-in., or did you preforms on the cross bar where sharpest focus appears, or did focus point land near legs/pole. Definitely awesome timing.

You keep knocking your glass but it isn't a problem. You have some very nice lenses in your kit. The 24-105 is a great lens and capable of very sharp images, it's not particularly good in dim light at f14 however. The 85 f1.8 is a phenomenal lens, check out the sample thread on this forum for some beautiful images. The 55-250 is also a dang sharp lens on most bodies, but again suffers in dim light, especially when you choke it down to f11 or more.
Try shooting in manual and choosing the aperture and shutterspeed to achieve the motion stopping or blur and DOF you desire and use the AUTO ISO. It is such a good way to get a pretty good exposure in varying light. You can then review your photo and see what the camera chose for ISO and learn from it. After you get more comfortable start choosing the ISO as well as SS and A.
Keep shooting and posting and have fun with that new camera!

Great shots !

Pole vault, to me, just seems like a really bad idea...so many ways things could end badly. Probably speaking from ignorance but still ... once you turn 50 you realize that we're all-too mortal.
