From what I remember the manual says the compass needs to be 'set up'. Is it possible there is something similar for the level. >>> Pictures? What pictures? <<<<

They are ok as a rough tool but not at all precise. As for the auto levelling in LR that scene is way too complex. The algorithm needs some info to tell it if there is a horizon or otherwise what is supposed to be vertical or horizontal. You could use a spirit level but really correcting this in LR manually is no biggie. Sometimes not taking a photograph can be as problematic as taking one. - Alex Webb
