My first mixed bag shots with this camera. I've never shot birds before but seeing as I had married the new body to my new 100-400mkll I gave it a go at my local creek I was a bit concerned when researching the camera as to how many folk complained about noise. IMHO this version betters the original 7D by a mile

Really admire your work Richard. Great color, contrast and sharpness. I'm a dentist myself. Here's a couple of my recent photos with the 7D Mk II.

Absolutely love the camera...

Very nice, Charlie. A lot better than the luck I've been having with birds. My old 70-200 F2/8 IS version 1 is a little too short for the small birds around here and, so far, I haven't been able to make the 70-200 + 2X extender III combination behave itself.

I need to get it sorted out because I'm wanting to head south towards the Gulf to shoot some wildlife a few times this summer.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Ahhaaaa moment. I was having trouble getting sharp shots with the 70-200 + 2x extender III combination. I decided to try again and took about a dozen photos of this little guy/gal on a wooden fence at an angle. I focused, shot, got off of him, focused on something else, and then refocused on him numerous times. I thought I had the MAF of this lens combination zeroed in after updating my firmware but all of the shots came out like the one below. It was front focusing on all of them. Time to work on the MAF again.

Progess. :)

Just updated the firmware last night and today I actually got home and was able to work with some decent light. I was having issues getting tact sharp images of birds the other day, although I was shooting wide open with the 2x extender. Today since I had better light, I dropped down to f8/f9. I was thinking I was going to have to do some mfa but today has me second guessing that decision. I'll hopefully get out tomorrow to shoot more and I'll see how it performs wide open again.

he tried to hide under ornamental juniper tree with his lunch feast!

about 12 feet @ 280mm f4 ISO 1600

How many of those various kinds of "worms" is he trying to cram in his mouth anyway?

I think he was in a mood for a smorgasbord. I am not familiar with bird behavior, but before seeing this, I would have guessed they eat them as they find them.

Doc,
To sort out this issue, if you can swing a mark II of the 70-200 it will be night and day improvement. Your basketball shots will thank you too.

Technique question for BIF.
Out in the open or at a distance, it would appear we could use 65pt auto mode to capture a bird against sky, or even track with single point. Both become more difficult as the bird Flys closer to you. How to you target and setup your Af mode when using a 300mm on 7dii and the bird is flying cross field at 30-50 feet? Single point at 30 feet is super hard to locate bird, and zone mode will capture all the nearby trees for low flight. Besides going to open area, what would you do?

I found that I got just a many hits and misses using Case 2 - single/expanded as Case 6 - zone. You still need to pan accurately to track the bird no matter which AF method you use. You have a little more area in the viewfinder but I had work at it just as hard.

For slower steady birds I use Case #2 and reduced tracking sensitivity (TS) a further tick from factory setting. The only change from factory Case 1 to factory Case 2 is a one stop TS reduction. I do this to ignore the background and anything that enters into the viewfinder. That is my base bird setting.

I was shooting gulls and they are fast and change direction quickly. Case 2 worked well. I shot with similar settings on my 7D for 5 years. I still prefer to use a single point/expanded but I have not worked with zone enough yet and have not gotten into very erratic subjects yet. Zone 6 was fine but the points were flashing all over and to was harder to keep track of what they were doing while I was panning. I'll try it out again.

You mentioned accel/decel at one point. To me it means things like a drag car that comes at you accelerating 'continually' very quickly. A dog running towards you eventually runs at one speed. A car traveling at 50 mph is to me is not accelerating.

Zone is a great tool but it seems like it is a computer trying to figure out what you want. Using single point/expanded I feel like I'm at the helm. The key is learning how to control zone so it knows what you want and that takes time and a lot of experimentation. I like it far more that I did with my 7D and plan to work with it more.
