From another thread, here is a back to back ISO 6400 100% DPP crops between the 70D, 7D and 5D3. This can help some that want to know what 100% crops look like.

Without wishing to start a huge argument.......what does the 7D2 offer over a 1D3? I ask that as a 1D3 user trying to decide if I should get one. Obviously MP and maybe usable ISO, any 1D3 and 7D2 users offer any thoughts?

The 7D was very close to the 1D3 at high ISO, with the 1D3 having better sharpness.

I would think that now the 7D2 is better than the 1D3, and all of that while having twice the resolution. Resize the 1D3 up, and it would be noticeably worse. AF is going to be better, and it should focus in lower light, although the 1D3 is one of the best next to the 6D and 1DX. Dual pixel movie mode if you do movies.

If you don't need more resolution or better high ISO or a bit more "effective" reach than what the 1D3 gives you, then it probably makes no sense in spending nearly a grand to get the 7D2.

If the 1D3 is working great for you, then there's no need to switch.

7D2 advantages? 20mp on target instead of 10mp. And if you are focal-length limited, then you also factor in the 1.6 vs. 1.3 crop advantage, giving you 20mp vs. 6.6mp (I think I did the math right. The 20mp sensor's pixel density is equiv to a 51mp full-frame sensor, while the 1D3's pixel density is equiv to that of a 16.9mp full-frame.)

The 65-point spread gets you closer to the outer edges of the viewfinder, allowing for better composition/framing instead of cropping later for composition. (And 20mp > 10mp for cropping later anyway.)

And of course there's video (if you want to shoot video). There's GPS if you want to geotag your photos.

But if you're not focal-length limited, your 1d3's working like a champ, then there's no need to pick up a 7D2.

butterfly2937, thanks!

So far, compared to the 1DX:
Focus: equal (I really mean that, impressed)
Buffer: perceived less buffering available. (Either a smaller buffer or due to increased file size)
Noise: No fair comparison 1DX kicks butt. (as expected). Better than my older 7D (2 stops??) but the noise is very manageable as long as you're not blocking up your blacks.
Battery: In 34 degree weather this morning, I burned 350 clicks and battery is only down 25%.
Controls: Equal to 5D MkIII and 1DX.

I truly feel better about my purchase reading this.

6400 ISO @ 800mm

As for flight photography (sorry for the butt shot, sucky day with wrong wind direction) the focusing system is equal to my 1DX. Fast, accurate and does well staying on target (I modified my custom focus tracking settings to suit my needs)

That looks real nice, especially at iso 6400! :)

Thanks Teamspeed and Julian.

Things to think about! With my 500 a 7D2 will add a fair amount of reach over what I have now with improved AF too. Hmmm, this buying lark is tricky.

This will depend, highly, on the speed of the card being written to.

It seems the info given is making your decision tougher. If there is a way you can get ahold of a 7D2 to test I would suggest that to be your best route. Good luck with your decision.
