Here is another one in the dragonfly series that I took with my "sports" settings. It was point expanded but the center point was exactly on the head. I think I just need to close the aperture and get more depth of field.

I don't trust AF point expansion. It has gone to the wrong point on me the few times I have tried it. So now I only use single point for this type of shot. In your pic, I think focus went to the plant.

Stopping down and increasing DOF may help sharpen the bug's head, but I think you will be frustrated unless you solve the root of the AF problem.

Maybe do a few tests on static subjects to see what the focus is doing.

Yes. Good point. I said expansion depending on subject. If all expansion points fall on the same plane as the intended area of focus great. If there is a possibility of any picking up another area mot on the plane then not so good. Spot focus may be a good application here.
