I definitely wouldn't let that lens go anywhere, great shots!

I did let that lens go when i had it before, so what?

Hi folks. New 7dii owner. Paired with Tamron 150-600. Great combo but having trouble tracking bif and getting focus. Wonder if vc on lens is causing it or if my camera needs different focus settings. What settings do you use for bif? Or sports for that matter!

Thanks for any input.

Can you describe trouble tracking? Are you on the bird and it won't initially focus? You are on the bird, it does focus but won't maintain it? Which AF mode are you in? Are you at the factory 10fps?

The most common solution is to use case 2 and even lower Tracking Sensitivity to -2.

Could be the VC but I don't know much about 3rd party lenses. You could try turning it off. There isn't very much you can do to fix focus besides MA which would effect still as well. It either focuses or it doesn't. There is no fine tuning focus feature. You can only adjust how many times the system will re-confirm initial focus lock with the 1st and 2nd priority settings. The 6 case numbers control tracking characteristics after initial focus lock.

Most important question. Are you trying to shooting steady birds or swallows? Some images would be helpful.

I posted before saying. Watch the Canon video and listen to what the presenter says about case 1 in the first minute. It is the base and the others are tweaks. I did suggest case 2 but it is just one change.

The reason I'm saying this is because new owners can get caught up in the case numbers and over tweak trying to solve a problem. Keeping things simple and concentrating on technique using correct shutter speeds often goes a lot further than mucking around with all the settings. You didn't mention if you were an experienced birder.

Won't get initial focus or track. I will start with those great links you provided and report back. THANKS!!!!!

Shooting both larger (spoonbills) and smaller birds the last few days.Same problems. I just got it and obviously have a learning curve to go through.

It is good start. If it does not focus on that it won't on a bird.

I have the same combo. As DP already posted to try some shots of static objects.

Other points, some of which may be related.

Tammy is known to be soft at the long end
There were some focus hunting issues with the lens on certain bodies but the 7D2 wasn't released at that time. Tamron did issue a firmware update to correct the problem. If your lens has the old firmware it may be causing the problem. I have not sent mine in for the update.
If your shutter speed is high try with VC off and on. I have read of VC / IS causing apparent blur at high shutter speeds.
Lastly, I try to keep my shutter speed in the 1/2000 neighbourhood or faster.

Rod

Also while in servo focus, try some big moving targets, like the front of a bus. That eliminates tracking error, unless you have REAL bad aim.

You need to turn off the VC on this lens for tracking otherwise it will likely result in soft images, although there is a lens firmware update for it, not sure how effective it is.

Haven't actually been out for photos much lately, but here's a couple of recent non-action shots for a change of pace...

I have only had my 7D2 a week and already I am pushing it and my new Tamron 150-600 to their limits. All while learning how to use all the autofocus settings and other bells and whistles. These images were 2 of many I took this evening as the sun was setting, it was getting DARK. They're noisy and not that great but there was so much action at sundown I couldn't help trying to make some decent shots, despite conditions. Tried all sorts of combinations of exposures, ISO, etc......

These are the only two I've processed so far. 7D2, Tamron 150-600 A fun challenge!!
