My more serious birding friends tell me they rarely see short tailed hawks here actually perched(and eating their prey)--mostly they are seen soaring-and evidently when they do, they clearly do not like to perch out in the open, the way our "trash" hawk, the red shouldered , tends to here in south florida. Bigger risk to the red bellied woodpeckers is probably the cooper's hawks, which have really established themselves here, and are the subjects of numerous homeowner complaints about their backyard songbirds being decimated by hawks.

I have not seen that before, I wonder if this a first winter bird with his juvenile plumage growing out. Again with his better half. A pair IF A male with two females IF (Who's the daddy!)
