I was using it for a while but sold it. I didn't like the extra bulk and weight when shooting handheld but I guess that is a personal thing. When I'm concerned about battery life I find carrying a spare or two an easier solution.

I generally have a grip attached to the 7D2 (I use the Canon one, btw) unless I'm travelling and need to save some weight in my carry on backpack.

Aside from the convenient controls for portrait orientation, I find it actually makes the camera feel more comfortable to hold and especially heavier lenses balance much more nicely*. Extra battery capacity can come in handy at times, though if I don't think I'll need it then I only fit one battery.

I might take it off sometimes when doing long exposures of several minutes as like any grip it can contribute to a small amount of camera shake if there's wind around and you're using the grips tripod mount.

* Exception to this is the 24mm pancake I recently acquired - it does feel a little weird holding a gripped camera with that small & light wee thing.

This is what I am thinking also instead of carrying that weight, I think I am better off buying spare batteries for now and when a good deal comes along with the canon grip maybe I will get one.

Thanks nqjudo and Terminalcity.

That would look really weird with that tiny pancake lens :).

I find the same. I have large hands and prefer the handling with the grip attached. That said I am also ham fisted, so need to remember to disable the grip controls when in landscape mode to prevent inadvertent operation and accidental selection of unwanted options.

Nice set Lester and thanks for the warning. :).

Anyone using grip with their 7D2? I am thinking since I am getting a rebate from the last deal I might as well use it for accessories and one I am thinking is the grip. 7D2 is already is kind if heavy (not really) but with the addition of a grip how do you guys like it in terms of weight and functionality.

Thanks

I grip/gripped every camera I own/owned; 50D, 7D2, 5D3. I find that it balances better with the lenses I own, plus without it my pinky just doesn't know what to do, so it allows me to better grip the bodies, too. It made a smooth transition to handling the 1D bodies. After using the 1D bodies for many years, I can't see me without a grip on those small camera bodies. I use the Canon grip, btw.

Interesting discussion as I an weighing the same issue. Haven't bought one yet. I have the Canon grip on my 6D and I like it. The ergonomics and control layout on the 6D are just about perfect for me. I still find the layout on the 7d2 awkward. The grip might help a little and I will eventually get one I think.

It does make them bulky and heavy.

I also have a grip with my 7D that is why I am considering one for my 7D2 and like Al said it would balance really nice with the long lens. Uhm I might just get one then after all :). I am so used with my 1Dmk2 also.

I'm with you on this Peter.

Use to shooting the 1D series, I'll wait before I add a grip to the 7D2.

I googled around looking for it. It doesn't appear to have any suppliers in the United States.

For those of us in the US market, the off brand grip that has all the controls looks to be the Meike brand grip.

Peter, i bought here in portugal, you can search for NIOBO and you will get there!

As Nogo said, MEIKE is probably the one that you can get in your part of the world.

And i can say that i had one from them on the 60D and was also very nice. Never had a problem with it!
