noise is my enemy
and not as colorfull or sharp as I would like
c and c as always
first game Ive shot all year
7d2 1.4 tc 70-200 2.8
shot from rt field

I got the original jpeg from Pat this morning.

Opening it up with Lightroom there is a ton on noise. I've never have that much color noise. What extender were you using with that lens, Pat?

I played with it. I ended up with something that looks half decent when viewing online at normal magnification but I lost a lot of detail trying to get the noise out. It would probably look like crap if you print it. You would probably have to back off the noise reduction and accept some noise to get a print.

Anyway, to get most of the color noise out, I had to bump the color slider up to a whopping 60. Usually the default 25 is enough. The luminance noise, I went up to 30. Then I sharpened to an amount of 77 with a 75% mask. Definitely not perfect but best I can do.

(See, Jeff, I am not a jedi master.) ;)

Well I said in my defence lol ....That you were a Master of the Game.. I guess that includes shooting it as well. Getting the most out of your exposure is the starting point I guess. Here's a Raw import to lightroom and exported with no work done to it at all Image top. This is where I try to start...we just don't always get that lucky. I'm thinkin similar light or maybe I was better off given the shadow's and I think late afternoon, I just shot it much slower there for the lower iso and shutter. I have had some asking how I was so noise free and sharp as of late Image 2, ...On this image I didn't move the sharpening slider at all. I used contrast, clarity, colour and dehaze slider's and cropped it a bit. and that is all. didn't touch any noise reduction and you can see the increased sharpness without ever adding noise to the image, without sharpening with the sharpen slider. and ya your still great Doc ... lol

edit: I guess I should say I shot this with the 70-300L, the little brother to the 100-400LII. It is still clear of dust while the 5 times younger 100-400LII continues to fill with junk the size of base ball's lol just sayin

I don't know what brand/model that extender is, but I would try to avoid using it and just go with the 70-200 F2.8 II lens shooting at 2.8 in that low light situation.

I find that the 7DII photos can be cropped quite a bit. I'd rather start with a photo with less noise and have to crop a good bit than one with all that noise.

That is just my opinion.
