Super stuff Doc, Over sharpening is a real trap we can fall in. I have been trying to do the exact opposite. I'm not sharpening at all and if I do its small amount's. removing motion blur and camera shake is where I'm at these day's I will use both LRcc and PScc on different images but that darn Luminance slider can add some noise in the summer light around here. This one was last night and I used no sharpening and no noise reduction in lightroom ... this is uncroped as shot. And only my left hand I might add lol my right is on the blink.

Jeff,
I have tried too resist the whole NR / sharpen /Mask path as frequently as possible; though I often fall off That band wagon. I often have to remind my of that there is actually a pretty natural balance between the two with just baseline image that at regular viewing (on sceen or print) and not 100% can often look as good. At a minimum, if applying NR, it really is best to paint it on to only areas of darker and /or background, but not to places where our eye will look for, and crave detail. In these detail starved areas by any NR, it is extremely hard to recreate perceived natural sharpness, and very often looks best without the NR and unaltered / baseline setting sharpness.

BTW, make a note to yourself to only feed the animals with your Left hand! (jk)

I've been wanting to get some photos of some bluejays in my back yard but so far they haven't cooperated. So, I am grilling on my patio without my camera handy. And not one, but two blue bluejays decide to visit my feeder. I think they are teasing me. ;)

I was just talking to my cousin today and learned there is a whole 'science' to bird feeding. Different feed and feeder types for different types of birds with great success. Might want to look I to additiona menu sections for the back yard for your feathered subjects.

Yes sure Levina, I was shooting a pair of Doves that were only a few feet away from me and I was trying to get them both in focus, and of course this purple finch jumped up there so I just shot her at 14, and it helps cut that ..to bright white ..in full sun.

Raw Peanuts in bulk here, and the Blue jays love them.

Always the case Doc, around here the birds like to get there last shot at the feeder around BBQ time so I get some great stuff while cookin lol in the colder month's I throw them peanuts in the shell and by mid fall I'm dropping them at my feet so they get super use to me. I have some outside of my yard that we have got to come to hand, and thats not easy with the blue Jay.

Here's a couple from last week, taken with the 7D2 and the 500mm f4 II. The first is an Artic Tern with a freshly caught fish (there were also Common and endangered Roseate Terns, for you bird watchers out there), the second an Atlantic Puffin I spotted while helping a friend document nesting terns off Nova Scotia, Canada. The puffin was handheld from a boat, the tern was rested on my knee while I sat on the beach.

Jeff,

Sorry to hear about your hand. Some days are better than others when it comes to this physical stuff. I haven't been out for a while, but you are an inspiration. Btw, I hope you aren't offended by some of the postings on my FB page. I should unfriend a few people but they are either relatives and/or relatives of my best friend. It can be a bit much at times.

I do agree... a little bit of sharpening goes a long way.
