that is what im afraid of....soft images.... Wonder any others experience this?

This body has been producing excellent images all over the place. My static shots are fine. Something to do with the set up, I was just not stable when shooting or both.

A young Red tailed Haw Takeoff at 700 mm, ISO 800, handheld.

Excellent shots. How did you retain focus on the eye through this sequence?

I shoot busy, living things, not bowls of fruit and corpses.

The whole idea of selecting a focus point on a per-frame basis for the things I shoot is completely absurd. By the time I press the button to select a point, the subject is gone forever.

Well, you didn't exactly list your use case. If what you are shooting is that fast then how reasonable is it to recompose? I don't hear a lot of people getting hug up on recomposing action shots - if it is that fast by the time you recompose the moment has already passed.

What I was trying to get at before being somewhat belittled is that there are several ways to get the camera to snap to different AF points and shooting settings so I was going to offer a couple of suggestions on how to maybe set up the camera to help you out, but since you are an expert in shooting busy living things I guess you have it all figured out already.

My first battery was down to 25% after setting up the camera...had the GPS on for about 2 min. Now I've lost track of which one it was and trying to narrow down the new battery

You can tell me.

I shoot birds with my 7D and 100-400. For (relatively) static subjects, I focus on the eye in One Shot, recompose, and shoot. Works, and is fast.

When I get my 7D2, I believe I will have more options, but don't have it figured out yet.

Birds in flight are a whole different matter.

Hehehe.

Is this capability you mentioned above only available on the 7D2?

Has anyone drawn a conclusion as to what CASE works best for BIF, and also what works best, AI Servo 1st or 2nd image priority for BIF

^erratic small bird or large slow moving bird, e.g. mocking bird or eagle.
I'm going to stick with Case 1 for a while, I think its the 'global' model.

I'll be out shooting a local football (soccer) game this afternoon with the 7D2. Starting in daylight but will be shooting right across sunset under floodlights to dark under floodlights. (aka black cat in a coal cellar!)
My old 1D4's coped ok so this is going to be interesting. Will be all jpeg for buffer speed.
Spent a lot of time reading the AF guide about getting set up to switch between different registered AF points like the 1D4 , which is great to have.
Particularly interested in seeing how the flicker function copes with the floodlights.

Wish me luck....

I've learned that if you are shooting wide open recomposing is very risky, the focal plane can shift enough that the shot is OoF. You can register an AF point to recall to, use the switch to new shooting setting feature and have a different AF point/area selected. And certainly change the multi-controller so it is set for direct AF point selection, that way you can move the AF point quickly (although the dials might be even faster if you are in an a hurry). With direct selection all you have to do is press in the multi controller to return to center point. You can also do all points tracking and see if it will track as you recompose as mentioned above. Almost the entire frame is covered by AF points, so you have a ton of flexibility to use an AF point and not recompose.
