Has anyone drawn a conclusion as to what CASE works best for BIF, and also what works best, AI Servo 1st or 2nd image priority for BIF

When you select a case and press the info button there is a pretty comprehensive explanation. You have to scroll down to read it all.

Liquidstone who is a good birder stated he used case 1 on another site. Unless your are shooting terns or small fast birds that zig zag case 1 is pretty good. Example - geese are slow and very constant. People running in one direction.

I tested Case 2 and worked well. I was tracking cars that went behind a large stone monument. The AF tracked the car, it showed up at two places on the monument as the car was behind it and the monument stayed OOF and when the car reappeared it was in still focus. I tried this several times and it worked well.

I've not used the others yet but reading about them I'd have to experiment shooting a hockey game for instance. My 5D3 was always on case one.

Something I learned at another site. Getting through the menu screens can take a while. There is no selection for that menu in the "My Menus" screen, only sensitivity. When you select the menu button press the Q button to move between the menus. I wanted some way to get the case menu quickly.

I have both 1st and 2nd image priority set to focus.

I did not have a successful time the other day. Images were not as crisp as I expect them to be. First for me. Static shots are great. Before I go out again.

1. I turned the iTR off.

2. Reduced my frame rate from 10 to 7.

3. I am going to used my Sandisk Ducati card and am looking for a faster one. I did not use that one when birding. I should have. I was on another site and they were recommending a UDMA 7. I don't know what the means yet but I will soon.

This is what Liquidstone posted on another site from a shoot. Hope you don't mind I copied this. Let me know and I'll delete it.

I used AI servo, and Case 1.

I alternated among 5-points, 9 points and 15 points (all central). I felt that the responsiveness of the AF system seems to be inversely proportional to the number of active AF points used; i.e. the 5-points is most responsive while the 15-points is least (difference in responsiveness is very, very slight though).

On the other side of the AF equation, choosing a small number of active AF points might give you a more responsive system, but keeping the small AF area on the BIF is also more difficult. So, one has to balance AF responsiveness vs size of AF net to be cast.

I use 15-points at featureless BG (like the sky), regardless of the color of plumage.

I use 5-points when the plumage is less contrasty and/or the BG is featured (say terrain).

I use 9-points for intermediate situations.

Note that this AF workflow is a result of only a few days of BIF shooting with the beta 7DMII. Once I get a production unit and spend more time with it in the field, I expect the workflow to evolve further.

Forgot to say. The 7D2 system is more complex than the 7D. I came across a page in the manual so I'm going to try with the IS off and on just to see if that was causing some problems. My 300L F4 IS is pretty old tech. Some members said that is a prelude to a new 300. They very well may be right.

Post count #1251.

Good luck,

Hehehe.

Is this capability you mentioned above only available on the 7D2?

I don't know the full capabilities of the 5D3 and 1Dx, but some 7D2 AF features are supposed to be new. It's not on the 7D, I know that.

You should probably either put it in Italics, or surround it with something like:

Today while I photographed my son's football game, I ran into an issue a few times that is a little concerning. I was in all points auto AF to see if the face and color tracking worked well... it actually did a pretty great job. A few times though when I pressed the shutter button to acquire and start tracking, the camera did nothing. It didn't drive the lens or even attempt to acquire focus. I released the button and tried again and it worked. This was with a 70-200 2.8 IS lens. Never experienced that problem with my 1Dx or a 5D3 I previously owned. While I am generally happy with the 7D2, I'm tempted to return it and just continue along with my 1Dx. I usually end up cropping a good bit so that is the only reason I hesitate to return it.

Anyone else experience a delay or refusal to acquire focus?
