A few times though when I pressed the shutter button to acquire and start tracking, the camera did nothing. It didn't drive the lens or even attempt to acquire focus. I released the button and tried again and it worked.
Anyone else experience a delay or refusal to acquire focus?

I experienced this same problem yesterday while trying to determine the proper MFA for my 2x extender on my 400DO (center focus point only, one shot mode). The camera did nothing a time or two and then operated normally, disconcerting to say the least. Did not happen today, not sure what is the cause.

Today I was noticing some weirdness. I should have brought my 60D to compare. But I was using spot/center AF only and focusing on a static bird. The lens/AF was front/back focusing quite a bit for no apparent reason, but it said it was "in focus".

This was a far off target though in some brush. I'm going to do more comparisons today/tomorrow. I love the speed and other features, but I'm still slightly concerned about AF or something being wrong.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I've gotten multiple sharp images today, but need to verify. So maybe it's the lens screwing up, or who knows.

Oh, I've also noticed that the available images you can capture can change quite a bit , depending on ISO. It might change by 20-30 images or more as you go up in ISO speed.


On a good note, those 10-15$ batteries I got on Amazon, so far I've taken about 1000 shots, and it says 15-20% left. Pretty good!
Although it's 2600Mah, and I swear I was getting almost that many shots on my Mark II battery..... which is 1865mah

Today while I photographed my son's football game, I ran into an issue a few times that is a little concerning. I was in all points auto AF to see if the face and color tracking worked well... it actually did a pretty great job. Yes, with exactly the same lens, today. A number of times it did that.
Shooting soccer. AF set for Case 4. Also set for Focus over speed on first and second shot priority. Set for 4 expanded points. Stil also ended up with a few OOF.

Not something I ever suffered with the 1D4.

I'm going to revisit some of the settings though as I'm not sure it can't be tuned out. The AF system is complex and very customisable, so I'll persevere for now.

i've got my 7D2 yesterday, shot 4 matches today - 1 soccer, 2 volleyball and 1 basketball. im editing these now in LR for media, but if anyone wants to see SOOC at ISO 10.000, here you go

I shoot birds with my 7D and 100-400. For (relatively) static subjects, I focus on the eye in One Shot, recompose, and shoot. Works, and is fast.

When I get my 7D2, I believe I will have more options, but don't have it figured out yet.

Birds in flight are a whole different matter.

Set the camera up to do back button auto focus. That way you have one shot and ai servo - best of both worlds. Focus on the target and recompose without moving the focus point. I'll try and find the back button af thread and post it here.

I feel like the best option yet, to nail focus, might be spot AF/single point. I tried expanded AF today (4 pts) and it was hit and miss. Really depends on many factors it seems like.

Not sure what case or settings to use yet for BIF shots. Tried all the cases and other variations.
Some cases might be too slow and others might be too finicky and move to the background.

Glenn Bartley suggested to use Case 1 with all sliders to the left I believe. But that seems slow to me, when trying to react to a BIF quick. Although it might stay locked on better.

OK, thanks for that suggestion. I am really going to work on this, to learn how to BBF ... and, just as importantly, how to go back to normal shooting. The camera is so complicated, I'm reluctant to get into unfamiliar settings. But BBF seems worthwhile to learn.
