i've got my 7D2 yesterday, shot 4 matches today - 1 soccer, 2 volleyball and 1 basketball. im editing these now in LR for media, but if anyone wants to see SOOC at ISO 10.000, here you go

7D2 + 70-200L f2.8 II IS USM, f2.8, 1/800, ISO10.000, JPEG (noise reduction set to Standard), focus point on the guy on the right (in white)

Very nice. Some noise reduction on the background an you would have a lovely looking shot. That is very cool.

I feel like the best option yet, to nail focus, might be spot AF/single point. I tried expanded AF today (4 pts) and it was hit and miss. Really depends on many factors it seems like.

Not sure what case or settings to use yet for BIF shots. Tried all the cases and other variations.
Some cases might be too slow and others might be too finicky and move to the background.

Glenn Bartley suggested to use Case 1 with all sliders to the left I believe. But that seems slow to me, when trying to react to a BIF quick. Although it might stay locked on better.

I saw one bird photographer who blogged he chose Case 3 and the set his 5D3 to -2,2,2. He figured you might as well have it stay dead on the original subject and follow it every where it went. He did have a post saying that he had adjusted to another setting.

I'll give that a shot.

Looking through my shots from today though, I'm not sure I got anymore keepers than I would have with my 60D though :\.
Hard to say for sure. But seems that way.

Could be the Tamron 150-600, technique or the camera. Or a combo of many things.
But I was doing everything as I normally do.

I know the Tamron is not the greatest with it's AF. My 70-200 seems to work quite well, although I need to keep testing it.

Has anyone tried using the 400 5.6 on the Mark II?

Are you guys using the 70-200 IS II?

I am using the original 70-200 2.8 IS. I just finished returning my 7d2. I cannot trust it to initiate focus which caused me to miss a few shots.

Liking what I see. Very, very sharp on the Flickr page.

Thanks Methodical.

Looking at the images online,I actually think I may have oversharpened a bit. This is the first time I tried using Canon's DPP software.I am still trying to find the best settings.

Regards,

Robert

Damn. But you are using the 1DX or 1D IV otherwise, correct?

I'm still unsure myself. I could use that money towards the Sigma 150-600, Canon 400 5.6 or something else, which might result in better images/more keepers.

I just need to spend a bit more time with the camera maybe. Although I've tried many combos/options in different situations so far, without a huge difference vs. my 60D.

I did some indoor shooting, using a flash on the dogs. The Mark II was a bit more responsive, but not drastically. Again, I don't think I got more keepers than my 60D, as I went back and forth between the bodies.

The Mark II was a bit faster/more responsive, and makes it easier for compositions and accessing settings. But I'm not sure if its worth 1500$ right now.....

Today was my second day of shooting with the mkII. I was also testing out a Canon 2x TC mkII with the 500 mkI, handheld. Didn't have the best of conditions though, at least a 25mph North wind. Was able to find a spot a little less windy below the pond that held a few sparrows.

Only had a little time out with birds, but so far I'm happy with the performance compared to my 7D and 5D3.

First outing with the 7D2 + 600mm f/4L IS II + 1.4x III, Bald Eagle at Semiahmoo Spit near Blaine, WA:

Fix the WB, up the exposure by 1/3-1/2 and clean up the background, this is an absolute keeper.

Assuming this was taken during the golden hour, I actually like the warm color. Fantastic shot.

Terrific eagle shots, Severnum! I too was out birding today and the only thing that happened was that a bald eagle pooped all over my car. Damn, what a mess it way. Luckily, my OCD personality does not let me leave home without a full complement of detailing supplies in the trunk, so the paint job was rescued without much trouble!

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.
