Did the same approach with the 80D shooting over 2,000 pictures at a car show having my 64GB Card filling up before the battery died. was at 24% when I got home. Today with the 7D Mark II, I took 730 Shots again barely turning on the screen to occasionally look at images or change case settings. It was at 27% when I got back. It's terrible. That said, I have an annual pass as I go regularly just to shoot the wild birds that show up around the property and to see my granddaughter performing of course  I had a suspicion that might have been the case.
