wish I had your sharpness

And have you done some official "tests"? Have you shot from a tripod with a remote? Or from a tripod with a delayed shutter and using mirror lockup? I had some challenges around sharpness when handholding that I was able to eliminate with a tripod... or just setting the camera on a rock and using a delayed shutter. This showed me some of it was technique, and some of it was Micro-adjustment of my lenses...

Just some ideas - and if you want more info just let us know :)

well after having the 20D for the last 10 years and getting a few errors on it ,finally pushed the button on the 7D2 (with grip ,extra battery,64mb lexar card, and the 1.4 50mm lens )(hopefully this will last as long) , so looking forward to the newer technology esp higher iso use and the hight FPS hoping all the good things I've read about this are true!
Was gonna press on the 5D IV but as i don't make money out of photography that 2k extra is a bit to much sigh we can all dream
wondering how the ef100-400 MK 1 works with this camera as cannot afford the mkII yet, also the 17-40, 70-200 mk1 and the efs 60mm macro lens time will tell !
so now i got a wait to get it approx within 4 days delivery , meanwhile ill download the manuals and read hopefully taking it in but at my age debenture is setting in i think !
so hi to all the 7d mkII owners good yo join the club
anyone with some basic settings for me will be indebted to me

Phil, welcome to the club! As you know the 7D2 has a very sophisticated focusing system and it pays to understand it and experiment with it thouroughly. There is a whole thread on the 7D2 focus system and while the first few pages may discourage you with lots of people complaining about the camera, things do settle down once everyone figures out how the camera works and some of the early issues are sorted out on Canon's part.

What kind of shooting do you do? Doing a Google search on "7D2 recommended focus settings" gives you many links. I like Nasim Mansurov's blog on it. I think a lot of birders have found Tim Boyer's articles very useful.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

The thing to remember is that the Cases 1-6 of whatever are just shortcuts various combinations of 3 different settings:

1. Tracking Sensitivity which determines how closely the camera follows the current object and how quickly it switches to something else
2. Accel./Decel. Tracking deals with the how the camera tracks objects that are moving steadily, or not. and
3. AF Point Switching, which dictates how fast (or not) the camera switches from one focus point to another.

The predefined cases are just shortcuts that have different values of these 3 parameters and are beneficial for one kind of shooting or another. You can of course go in and edit any of these values to whatever you want, and that is what some of these blogs suggest.

Here is a good primer on the pre-defined cases and what Canon suggests they be used for:

I have all these lenses except the 60mm macro. I haven't had ONE problem with any of them. They all focus fast and accurately.
Good Luck :-)

How do you like this combo? I'm seriously wanting to get into wildlife photography and thinking of selling one of my 6d for a 7d2 and picking up the 400f5.6. I'll bring my 135L for things that are closer.

Not a bird... :p

But I did get two photos chosen for the 2017 Bolsa Chica reserve bird calendar this year! Funny thing is they were taken with my 7DI not the 7DII.

You will enjoy this camera and don't worry with the 100-400 v1 you will be able to shoot some nice pics to.
