The 500 II is a little over seven pounds, the Sigma and Tamron 150-600 are a little over four pounds, not even close to the same weight.

I knew someone would say that, however when in your hands it fills comparable to the Sig & Tammy. I think it comes down to the balance of the Great White.

As Scrumhalf "Sam" says , he's not that very big, and he manages it quite easily. Now the 600II or the 400 2.8, we are talking heavy to handle. Looks like you have the 500 V1, that one to is heavy compared to the II

I am 5'6" and 150lbs soaking wet and the 500 II is no problem handheld for me. If it is really windy outside, as it sometimes tends to be on the Oregon coast for example, I may wish I had a tripod to help me steady it, but under most shooting circumstances, I have been able to hold it with no discomfort. Of course, no two people are the same, so I can only give out my experience.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

For me, I doubt very much that "balance" would compensate for the considerable weight of a lens like the 500mm II. Illusions don't count for much when your back starts to ache.

Maybe if I filled the lens with helium...

Fair enough.

For me, my 7D2 and 100-400mm II combo is pretty well the limit when used extensively on photo trips. Ergo - the 500mm II would be too much. Too bad (for me, not for you), because it is such a wonderful lens.

This slightly underexposed and heavily cropped photo shows off well the capability of the 7D II, especially for a crop camera. Here's the original simply converted to jpg with no processing, showing the crop area, and a cropped and retouched version. This is a Grasshopper Sparrow, a rarity here in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Taken with 7DII, 500 f4 II, handheld.

Great example of the 7DII's capabilities (and your PP skills, of course!)

The flats in the North of the country provide interesting photo opportunities in autumn, especially at high tide
