I don't know where you live, but that yellowlegs might be a solitary or spotted sandpiper.

It might be. I live in Los Angeles, CA, and the picture was taken at Glendale Narrows:

More pictures of this bird to show the size compared to a mallard. Need help identifying that bird.

It's a Spotted Sandpiper. They only look spotted on the underparts in breeding plumage, but this bird still has a few spots left.

Okay, no birds for me this time of year. A couple of post of photos from this week's game. A friend of mine couldn't make the game so he let me use his old 300 F/2.8. It took me a little time to get used to the fixed focal length shooting the game.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Sometimes this camera just does not want to focus where I want it to even in spot AF and the subject not moving. I don't get it. It does work most of the time however.

Same here, it is a challenge. Often focus will grab something in the background. Other times a shot will be out of focus and a reason can't be determined.

I generally avoid spot AF, since it is supposed to be less sensitive even if it is more selective. I've been using spot AF more recently, though, in good light, to learn more about its capabilities. The purpose is to see if I can isolate areas better for focus. It seems to be successful so far, but it's hard to know what the difference would have been. Like you I'm still getting mysterious focus errors at times.

My two cents.
Pump the back button focus each little while to make sure you are on target locked.
