Pulled the 50 1.4 out of mothballs for some tests, seems to be focusing consistently (maybe slightly back focused but target is still in focus) at a variety of distances, so that one seems to be pretty good..

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention, the 7D2 did great metering using the flash. Much more consistent than my 70D (which almost seems to be a fundamental flaw with the firmware on the 70D..)

So I took it back and got another one. This one definitely seems much better now. Before, even in One Shot, my Canon lens would twitch back and forth trying to lock focus, but now it doesn't. I'm sure I have all the same settings applied on the new one.

I'm using Focus Priority for both images, One Shot, AWB, ITR On, Spot AF on the center position, and a 2 second timer with Mirror Lockup, on an extremely solid tripod.

I still am seeing a couple images here and there that are not quite sharp, but not nearly as bad as before. But it is random. It also seems like I still have to set my Tamron to +20 AF tune, to get it looking sharp at 600mm.

I've been testing this about 12ft away from a wall, where the focus chart is taped.

I should note, my 60D is missing focus slightly sometimes, about the same as my 2nd Mark II is doing I think. So it's possible my USM is slipping sometimes or is another random thing.

I think I might be good now. But need to look at the images again on my PC.

Which focus chart do you use with the AF DOT Tune?

Thanks

ACES great shots. I think all of the Sigmas will most likely need to re-chipped or if they are the newest ones need their programming updated once Sigma can figure out Canon's code well enough.

Eric set your sensitivity -1 or -2 to keep the jumping down on how fast the camera ges to a new target.

Thanks! Yeah i read on here that a few others are having problems with their Sigma focusing properly. On a side note anybody know how to turn the "stop focus search" from off to on? Looked in the owners manual and eit just says you can turn it on which helps with super telephoto lens when they cany achieve focus but doesnt tell you how to.

Maybe not the BEST way to check. I really should use the setup that clearly shows front/back focusing better.

I did another test quick this morning, with the Tamron. Same lighting, slightly further away, and a different subject (barcode label). The lens focused perfectly in 10-15 shots, and I actually had to remove the micro adjustment..... So I need to keep checking. I'm positive I was outside of the minimum focusing distance before. By at least 3-4 ft.

" The chart should take about 1/3-1/4 the size of the entire image, as shown below"

This was the case for my 70-200. Not for the Tamron at 600mm though.

But as I said yesterday. Both lenses were randomly missing focus but alot. Or screwing up. Also my 70-200 was twitching back and forth in One Shot.
They both "seem" to work fine now.

The real test will be this weekend probably, if I can get out and do more wildlife shooting.

Page 122 of the manual, AF tab 4, Lens Drive when AF impossible, the ON option is Continue Focus Search, or else stop focus search which is OFF.

Nice on the flicker detection. It has some really awesome features.

And a public thanks to Helen/Adorama, they are doing a price match on my kit order to now include the cam ranger, in all fairness I had to pay for the spare battery which wasn't part of the bundle with the cam ranger, but I expected that and will gladly pay for the spare to get a cam ranger and an even more comprehensive wireless solution than even the 70D (and the fairly limited EOS remote) can do.

Once it shows up I'll give it a try on the 7D2 (I think their website states that full 7D2 support is coming on the 14th).

Gotcha. I would think that 4 or 8 point expansion is all you would want. I think the zone would be best with a background that is far away.

I think I can confirm this. I was trying the af out on some bloodhounds, Using Case 6/zone and found while the ones withe the dogs with far background came out good, when I tried to catch them coming down the trail I had miserable results. It was focusing, but by the time it would click the shutter focus was on the tail of the dog moving toward me. Way too close I think using the zone system. Should have tried the 4 point expansion.

I need an afternoon of lobbing hedgeballs or something to help me figure out the best fit for what. Polar vortex heading my way isn't going to help that.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

I took my 7D II + 16-35 f/2.8 II as well as my good old 7D + 70-200 f/2.8 IS II to an MMA event on Friday night and was blown away at the difference in IQ. The blacks were blacker, and there is just something about the images that is so crisp and brilliant. I shot at 1/1000 at f/2.8 and ISO 1600 all night long. It handles ISO 1600 like a champ. As a matter of fact, I stopped down and shot at 6400 just as a test and am confident the images are usable at ISO 6400 as well. I am thoroughly impressed so far after rattling off 32GB worth of images in one night. The AF is ridiculous. I quickly discovered though, that I still have a lot to learn with this camera. It is beautifully simple, yet when you dig deeper (into the menu options), you realize that there is actually a TON of customization and so much fine tuning that can be done. With that said, I still managed to nail a ton of amazing shots that the photographer next to me constantly missed (D7000 :P - we compared throughout the night). Conclusion: it's untouchable as far as I'm concerned. Canon hit another home run and can without a doubt call the 7D II "King of the Crop", once again. :D

Now I just need adobe to hurry up with the codec so that I can start editing. Booooo!

These images are SOOC. May have a general auto tone pre-set when I uploaded them, but other than that...

Pretty happy so far... I've shot volleyball indoors as well and am missing a lot fewer shots due to the AF accuracy and I'm able to push the SS a lot higher thanks to the better noise handling.:D
