The shot is so clear. Where did you take the photo? As you know, around here on the East coast most owls/hawks and stuff live in forested areas, so getting these clean, open meadow type of BIF shots is near impossible. The Eagles at Conowingo are the lone exception; I'd love to do more in-flight photography.

I miss the DO II :-(

Like I said, without the DOii I'd come home empty handed....well the big sensor helped hugely with cropping but the light getting on the sensor had to be good ;)
Call me crazy but I don't miss the 500ISii. You've heard of liquor talking? Well that's an old body talking!

Using the DOii on the Sony A7Riii. I post the landscape view of the flying out so you can see the horribly huge crop I had to do to pull off for an image. The shot cropped from one
in the series.

The default photo size in my galleries is 1500 x 1000, so I'm glad that a size of 1600 x 1600 is now allowed. Let me try posting a 1500 x 1000 image.

White-throated Kingfisher (Halcyon smyrnensis)

Habitat - Clearings, along large streams and rivers, and in open country.

Shooting Info - Bued River, Rosario, La Union, Philippines, March 30, 2017, EOS 7D MII + EF 400 DO IS II, 400 mm, f/5.0, 1/2000 sec, ISO 320, approx. 15.6 m distance, manual exposure in available light, hand held, major crop resized to 1500 x 1000.

Matt sorry so late in reply....been traveling.
East coast owls are a pain! Short-eared owls are nowhere near me so I used e-bird to find possible locations. Cades Cover in GSMNP came up, two sightings. So off we went in the campervan to Cades Cove Campground.....camping at 5F :)
Found the area, knew it was the area because we saw a couple Northern Harriers but didn't find the SEO until 30 min's after sunset and had to flash the bierd. Sadly I know little about nightime animal flash photography :(

OK so a portrait but I wanted a BIF SEO :) Back to e-bird.
Several sightings in the middle virginia area, near Charlottesville.....so off we go....nothing image wise. We found SEOs but flying after dark BUT another photographer was there and he told us where to go for daytime SEO sightings=Fowler Beach Delaware. So that is how we found the SEO BIFs. Sadly we only had 3 hours there. I think if I had more time....
Next year when we go back I'll plan on three days there. Just a matter of time before one will fly close enough that huge crops won't be needed. I'll still take the A7Riii just in case ;) It seemed to work well with the DOii.

Nice shot!
I tried at home to adapt the 400f4 DO2 to my A7R3 but the AF is much slower than the lens on a Canon 7D2. How does the lens perform its AF on your A9? You used a Metabones?

Here is one with A7Riii(3) + EOS 1.4TCiii(3) + 400DOii.
Sony ILCE-7RM3
EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM
ƒ/8.0 560.0 mm 1/1250 400
Taken this morning/bitter bitter cold.
Handheld.
For perched bierds the above combo does fine. Def. slower than 7Dii (used a 7Dii for a long time) but doable.

Canonised, to me, and I have to emphasize to me (I really don't want to steer anyone wrong, the a9 combo works fine. I would not hesitate to BIF with it.
It is not perfect. It is not 7Dii + 400DOii level but it is close enough that I can use it.....I don't have any choice. In Sony land there is no 400mm, moreso no 400mm
this lightweight and F4....all obvious things I know.
The Stork above. I shot him(her) for almost 2 seconds and netted around 34-36 images all focused/sharp/usable, all samie same except for wing position BUT this is
a big bierd AND I had time to get on him and allow the a9 to get the dancing green squares. He wasn't flying straight at me but close so the a9 is fast enough to move
the glass in the DOii.

Something else, I bought my a9 used. An EOS owner had it for a week, was disappointed in how it worked with EF lenses.....I suggested he wait for a Metabones update before
selling but he'd made up his mind and I benefited at a less than GreenToe price at the time. I'm very satisfied.

I don't know what else to tell you that might help but of course am willing to try to answer any question you have.

p.s. still no Metabones update that I know of yet (I do need to check)

^ Canonised another that might help.
This time a9 + MB + EOS TC 2.0 + 400DOii.
I've found AF and AF-C still usable and again (to me) almost
7Dii level.

Just checked. There is a MB FW update to 0.58. Don't see that it affects
Riii/a9/400DOii though but will apply it later tonight.

European deer in the Swiss mountains. It's a tough winter with a lot of snow this year, and many of them won't survive.
