Canon EF 400mm f/4L IS DO II USM

This is a hard thing to do but in the near future I'll probably be marketing my 400DOii.
Though the Sony FE 400/2.8 is not exactly what I want, and since the DOii is almost the last
remaining EOS lens I have of any import, it is getting close to time to send it off to another user and
be all e-mount Sony.

What would replace your 400 DO II ?
The Sony 100-400 ?

I'm interested in the 400 DO II. I especially like the way it performs with 1.4xIII. I've rented this lens before and have enjoyed it.

But for now I'm holding off on buying any expensive gear. Nikon may offer a mirrorless camera and a 500 f5.6 lens. Canon may come out with the 7DIII. And I still have my eye on Sony's system. Lots to consider. I'll give it another 6 months and see what shakes out.

Nope, got the FE100400GM. The 400/2.8. I just have to be honest with myself in my ability to wield it. I can hope someday Sony puts out a 400/4 or 400/4.5 but
I'll probably 6 feet under by that time.

At 6.4 lbs the new Sony 400 f2.8 is on the light side. But I understand your concern.
If I do go with a Sony system, I'll have to pass on the 400 f2.8 lens. $12K is over the top for me. I just hope Sony's 100-400 will satisfy me.
Guess time will tell.

It is a pretty serious 560/5.6 DO prime, which disassembles into a TC and a 400/4, to fit into more knapsacks!

Bayou City Flyers held their annual War Birds Fly In last weekend. It was hot. I parked where I could stay close to my SUV AC, these are considerably cropped. Wonderful flyers and fun to photograph but I only lasted about a half hour, 98 in the shade and I was in the full sun.

I doubt many read this thread who might be looking for the DOii but in case you know anyone

How's the old saying go, it all depends on the money.

I still have my original 400DO, but the MKII is incredibly tempting. Just a matter of convincing myself to spend the dough. And I promised myself I wasn't going to spend anything this year!

How true. I like the 400 DO II (with and without the 1.4xIII) so much that if I stay with Canon I will sell my 300 f2.8 IS II and put the money toward the DO.

In regard to the ongoing discussion about the 400DOii and the 1.4iii, that combination very seldom leaves my 7Dii. A perfect combo for my bird photography and my arthritic hands. YMMV.

I agree about the 400 DO II and 1.4xIII. In the past I rented this lens and used it with my 1DMKIV. I may rent it again and use it with my 80D for an air show next month. I wonder if I'll see any performance difference.

Me wanting the 400/2.8 Sony is me not accepting the hard fact that I can only hold the DOii but for so long.
Truthfully I can only wield the FE100-400 a bit longer.
It's sometimes hard facing reality AND though I'm in Sonyland now that doesn't mean I wouldn't look at
the 7Diii when it comes out.

If I was smart I'd get to know the RX10iv really well

A man can never have too much camera gear.

The RX10iv is worth looking into. It won't give you the IQ that the Sony 400 f2.8 provides, but you will still end up with attractive photos.

Also, have you considered micro 4/3 gear?

Both are excellent BIF shots Robert. I'm always impressed by the image quality that the RX10iv puts out.
