I wonder how long its going to take someone to clip the EF-S ring off to make this an EF mount......

don't know about that, but I got mine today from Best Buy. 7DMkII and I can hardly tell it's on the body. Got it so I could test out the body I got from Adorama in its "stealth" sale while awaiting the funds for a tele. I'll give it a try tomorrow in the local combat zone ( aka Filthadelphia)

You should be able to just stick your finger in the back and pop it off just like the EF-S 10-22mm.

Thats what im thinking. That'd be a pretty stellar lens for a FF i'd think.

Mine came in today. It was already dark so I only took a few shots at home. But one question: Is the focus supposed to be silent? I thought that was one of the features of an STM lens. I'm asking because my sample is anything but silent. It makes a very audible high-pitched motor sound while focusing. It sounds like an electric driver or drill. Well not quite as loud, but much louder than my USM lenses. Is this normal? Did Canon put some toy motor into this lens to get the price this low? Or does my sample have an issue with the focus motor? If you got this lens, how does yours sound? I had the 40mm before and that one was rather quiet.

The pancake STMs have to use a different sort of motor from the others, so even though they're STM, they aren't silent like those are.

If it would cover an FF sensor I think this lens would be just what Street Photographers are after. Would do nicely as a lightweight landscape lens as well.

The EF-S 24mm STM has a metal mount, and just like the EF-S 10-22mm, you should be able to pop out the the plastic/rubber piece and mount it on a FF camera.

BUT....

1) The image circle will be smaller and will probably have serious vignetting with dark corners if used on a FF camera.

2) The rear lens element moves backwards as you focus to infinity and I suspect it will contact the larger mirror on a FF camera.

Have you tried? My 18-135 STM has a baffle that pops out easily using one finger...

The lens is totally useless on FF as it vignettes badly at all focal lengths just like my 15-85 USM did.

Yes, the whole circular plastic area pops out. You do have to pull pretty hard. Just like the 10-22mm.

If it were an EF 24mm pancake, I'd be on it in a heartbeat. Because I like 24mm on full-frame and I like the 40mm-ish FOV on APS-C, so an up-to-date focusing and really small 24 might make me do it. But I have a 24mm/f2.8 lens already, which isn't all that large and already does double-duty on both formats. The only way I'd go with this EF-S 24, I'm afraid, is if I ever decided to do video, and "hell" and "freeze" seem major parts of that concept...

...Mike

Perhaps hell is freezing over - or perhaps not. I'm not (yet) shooting video but I have bought myself an EF-S 24mm/f2.8 despite saying I wouldn't. The size was what changed my mind. I've been carrying my 7DII+100-400II in a "snoot" bag with assorted accessories (tripod foot, brush and cloth, spare battery, 1.4x extender and 24mm lens) in the pocket on the outside of the bag - but it was a tight fit, and attempting to add a circular polariser made it just too tight for comfort - and made me think I was risking breaking something. Replacing the EF 24mm with the tiny EF-S lens made everything fit much better for not that much extra cash. Having that 24mm option as an alternative to the long zoom, without having to carry a full-size camera bag, comes in handy so many times, and putting the full-frame 24 back in my go-to bag with my 5D saves me from having to remember to move it when grabbing a kit to go out with.

...Mike
