I already have the EF 35 f/2 IS USM, but it's pretty beefy and sometimes too long indoors. 24mm would be good for indoors if the light is good enough (if not, i'll use the 35), and travel lens. Anyway, doesn't seem like you can go wrong when the price is so low.

I have to say with the release of this lens you can get a really good and light setup of lenses that covers a lot for a relatively very very small amount of $ for crop now

I mean, isn't this a great beginners set, a lightweight cheap and well performing trinity:

UWA lens for landscape
10-18 IS STM - $299

Light, generel purpose lens
24 f/2.8 STM - $149

Portrait/bokeh lens
50 f/1.8 - £125

Totalt: $573

Yeah, im very liking canons strategy to offer better and cheaper lenses to enthusiasts and amateurs. This setup would give great versatility at a very good price!

And to all thinking theyre right; theyve made the 24mm 2.8 not a 2.0 because it wouldnt be a pancake anymore, its that simple!

And now i think youve killed another thread again...

I'd rather have a stop of light than the pancake... Even if it doubled the size it'd still be small

If I only shot with a crop body, I would be very interested in this lens. However, this new pancake on my 7D does nothing for me compared with the 40mm pancake on my 5D3, and I just acquired a EOS M w/ 22mm pancake as a "pocketable" APS-C body. I do not have much use for a "wide angle" f/2.8 prime on my 5D3, so even had this been an EF mount I doubt I would be buying one.

No,

24mm is 24mm. 15mm is 15mm. Those are true focal lengths.

You're describing field of view.

There's a difference, and it's not just rhetorical. Depth of field for example.

Very best,

Folks seem to get very confused about the crop factor.

this wasn't really spoken about so much and it is a cheap lens
but i never really was impressed by the 40mm pancake because I didn't like the focal length
but if the 24mm is as good (or better) than the 40mm optically
then I think I have found a fun light lens that I can see myslef really enjoying.

anyone else?

They can keep'em. They are a big waste of lens materials as far as I am concerned.

well you don't have a APSC crop camera...so i'm actually surprised you even bothered to waste your time by clicking on this thread...let alone leave comments...

Simple, curiosity. I am always surprised why some folks like these. But to each his own.

thanks ebiggs for your curiosity. I think the issue is primarily the form factor (for me). Assuming, of course, that it has good (or better than good) optics. There are times when I want to reduce weight for myself etc.

I have the 85 II and while I love it, there are times that it doesn't serve my purpose.

and to note, I also have about 35-40 different type of screw drivers for the same reason...different tools for different uses.

have a great day.

Definitely keen on it.
I'm using the Sigma 18 - 35 most of the time, so will be nice to have a small lens to knock about with. The sigma is the best lens i've ever owned, but sure weighs a tonne!

But would it be $150-200? I don't think so.

People are different, some people (like myself) value low weight a lot. And this is perfect focal length and low weight. I find it more fun to shot if you have lighter gear.

I'm really looking forward to reading reviews. I expect it to be equally sharp to the 40 pancake
