I have just purchased 2 new 16MB CF cards and they came packaged in clear plastic containers. The trouble is these containers will not fit into my Lowepro backpack. The original 4MB cards came in smaller milky colour plastic containers and they fit the backpack Velcro covered card holders perfectly.

So my question is, can I buy suitable plastic containers anywhere? they measure 51mm x 42mm outside, while the new containers are a massive 68mm x 56mm.

The photo shop I purchased the cards from does not sell separate card "boxes", only card wallets which I don't want.

You just don't like card wallets?

Not at all, but my backpack has purpose made card holders already. A wallet is an unnecessary addition.

If your backpack has card holders why do you need to use a plastic container too?
I've never used a container, just a wallet or the holder in my 'gadget' bag. Never lost or had a card go bad.

I prefer to store CF cards in hard sided cases which snap firmly closed. Many of the soft sided "pocket" cases are too hard to easily inspect to make sure no little bits of fluff or something has gotten in, and are at a greater risk of getting something inside one of the pin holes of the CF card. Plus they're more prone to water damage in soft sided cases if the worst happens.

While ago I switched to using a Pelican case for my CF cards. The one I have holds 6 of them, and I like it as it means I can easily see at a glance which cards are in what state.

Back label out and upright: Card is formatted and ready for use.
Front (brand) label out and upright: Card contains data, and should not be reused.
Front (brand) label out and upside down: Card contains data which is already imported, but has not yet been formatted.
Back label out and upside down: No meaning: Something got messed up and I should double check all cards.

Only thing I don't like about the pelican case I have now is that opening the case then exposes all of the cards. I would love to get a bunch of smaller snap closed plastic cases that I could put in the place of the foam gasket holder/spacer, so each card still has a 'cover' over it when the main shell case is open.

Are you still using the 4gb cards? If not, just put the new cards in the old card holders.

Yes, exactly that. Many thanks.

The cloth cubby holes can allow dust in. I prefer to protect my cards if at all possible. Hopefully Duane0524 has given me the information I need.

My feelings, exactly. I have never found anything better than the Pelican card cases.

I tried those eBay card holders and they were too flimsy to use in the field. The hard plastic ones that card manufacturers provide seem hard to come by.

With all the small holes in CF cards, it doesn't hurt to store them in the plastic cases to avoid dust. A plugged hole in a CF card and a quick insert into the camera can be costly.
