OK, so I'm going to be a bit cynical here and say that I think that Canon loaded up the 7DII with features to compensate for the sensor. Yes, I know it is a 'new' sensor, but I would be very surprised if it is more than 1/2 stop better (raw obviously) than the 7D - which would still be nice.

So, even though I probably won't get one, I'm excited. Why? Well because in the past Canon has had a set of features that it kept to 1D series cameras. This looks like they have broken that mold (except AF point metering). Full auto ISO capabilities and f8 on a crop along with everything else.

I also really, really like the fact that they have a serious crop camera (unlike another manufacturer I could mention). I honestly think that as long as Canon keeps making crop cameras I will own one for a variety of reasons (not just 'reach' but also lens related). It also goes to show that when Canon said the crop was not going anywhere, they stuck to that. I have the same feelings about the EF-s 24 pancake.

And before anyone says it is 'obvious' they would do this, there were some people wondering if a 7DII would even come out after the 70D and they were not being laughed at. It was a possibility that the 70D would be the top of the crop line when we have 'cheap' FF cameras.

Is this the first time a crop camera has come out more expensive than a FF camera from the same manufacturer? Interesting if it is.

I think the "crop" sensor is here to stay as a standard format. Many people like the format plus it allows manufactures to create camera bodies at a lower price point. What the manufactures save in creating a smaller sensor allows them to add more features to the functionality. For many (if not most) this small trade off is well worth the money. You can get a camera that has superior AF, high speed shooting and all of the "bells and whistles" for a fraction of the cost of the "full frame" counter part.

Why would they need to do that? It is a crop sensor camera. Even with improvements it is still a crop sensor and will perform as such. I don't believe anyone sensible was expecting it to out perform a full frame sensor in high iso/IQ.

I agree that crop isn't going anywhere. Canon sell far more crop sensor cameras than FF. The reality is that most people don't need FF at all.

I agree, but it seems to me that they are still under performing the competition. Maybe I'm incorrect - I haven't actually used the latest Sony crop or the 70D.

Well, thanks for the thought, I've been having interesting life "issues" and haven't been very active, but I try!

They really broke that mold with the 7D, and shattered it with the 5D3.
I am glad to see that this direction has been successful and that Canon is continuing in that direction with the 7D2. It really packs a lot of 1D into a 1.6x cropper!!!
