Are the White House pics a good measure of what Canon cameras can do?

I think the shots are all great. Excellent color rendition, WB spot on. Images nice and clear and crisp.

They are not the dreamy shallow dof portrait stuff but he does an excellent job as to what the images are intended for.

I bet he shoots raw to CF and smaller JPG to SD....

like I do :)

I agree, they seem technically spot on, great images. It's just a little different from the pics we see often on Flickr.

Yes, because its actually a really well taken photo that also hasn't been through instagram.

The first thing I though about that image was how well lit it was. The whole point here is to make a really good image without making it so that it draws attention to the photographer. The fact that it looks 'natural', SOOC and like anyone could have taken it is precisely the idea - makes you feel like you could be standing there. But no way are you going to get a shot looking like that if you don't know what you are doing.

I think with the lighting it is possible to get a shot light that SOOC, but that doesn't mean it's a shot anyone could get just by exposing correctly.

I think all of his images are done by natural light only.

Editorial photography is fast and the photographer learns quickly how to operate his gear. Think of your camera. How many controls can you confidently adjust while keeping your eye in the viewfinder? Personally I have to look at my camera to adjust ISO, drive, even c.

The whitehouse photographer probably burns through thousands of shots a day. I'm sure spray and pray is frequently employed. Just hold that shutter and never let go. Adjust while on autofire. Get a new camera each month.

This could be true but probably not when the doors are closed and they are all around the table.

I think he does pretty goood. I find the images interesting to keep me looking for more.

I've been following for quite awhile...not because of the politics but because the photography engages me.

If you click on the 'Show Exif', you'll see way down near the bottom, he shoots in RAW, and uses Adobe Camera RAW 8.3 for Mac, along with PS6 for Mac.

Case solved.

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

Same here. Good stuff. Politics aside, Souza's work offers an exciting view into the goings on at the WH.

What would be really great is if it turned out that, in that famous shot during the Bin Laden raid, it was also Souza who photoshopped in GW Bush poking his head up from behind the crowd, and posted that on the internet.
