Hmmm, it sounds like I re-invented the wheel when I came up with the great idea of setting C3 on my 7D as a 'capture anything' mode. If something pops up I can just slam it into the last position on the mode dial (no need to look) and it'll be in Av Mode, ISO800, f5.6, etc.

Good enough to let me grab a couple of instant shots before deciding on 'proper' settings (assuming the bird/beast/whatever is still about).

I do like this idea, and will probably set that up now.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You're not alone. The "wheel" has been re-invented innumerable times.

I have a few "wheels" under my belt myself.

I would have picked HP5, f/8 and be there! I always much prefered HP5 to Tri-X for ASA 400 and FP4 to the Kodak 125 offering, which for the life of mr I can't remember the name of.

Another advantage is that a lot of lenses are sharper 1-2 stops slower than their fastest aperature.

So if you are shooting a 50mm 1.4 and I'm shooting a 50mm 2.8, you can set your lens to 2.8 and have a sharper picture than I can at 2.8.
