I want to get a good light meter that is very easy to use and accurate for both indoor lighting photos, and outdoor ones to be used with a 5DM3. Can anyone please recommend some models that are both accurate and easy to work with?

Thanks in advance.

I love my Sekonic L-358. There are lots of YouTube videos on how to use it and the manual is pretty easy to follow. Its around $300. They have a newer model but it is more expensive.

Any real advantage to the newer model?

Thank you.

Another vote for the 358 - love mine, especially when using fill flash.

That model is no longer available at BH. Are either of these the updated versions?

Thanks.

The L-478D is the closest replacement for the L-358 which does not have a radio module in it for PocketWizard remote triggers.

The L-478DR has a radio module in it. This module is totally useless if you don't use PocketWizard remote triggers.

A number of folks don't care for the touch-screen interface that the L-478D family uses. My first step if I needed to replace my L-358 would be to look for a new (but old stock) unit and then I'd look for a good used L-358.

+1. You should be able to find a good used one for around $200-225

The used market is an excellent alternative...

  • the Minolta brand meters are very reliable and accurate meters that had the #1 position in the market back in the 1990s and into early 2000's when Minolta withdrew from the meter market, and then the camera division was sold to Sony, as the corporation had financial difficulties.
  • Gossen is a highly respected name from over 50 years ago, and set the standard for meter sensitivity back then with their Lunasix.

Sekonic advanced into prominent #2 while Minolta was #1, then moved into the #1 position in the recent decade. Kenko purchased the rights to the Minolta designs and offer the two most recent models of Minoltas under the Kenko brand name now.

If you are going to spring $220 for a light meter, this is a SUPER buy...the top of the Sekonic line

http://www.apug.org/forums/viewpost.php?p=1692294 (external link)

The discontinuance of the L358 makes buying them pricey! It could be 'more meter than you need' with its sophistication, but it does everything the L358 does -- and much more.

I'm a bit unclear as to why I might want the ability to use PocketWizard remote triggers.

I'm planning to get a CamRanger http://www.bhphotovideo.com …ireless_dslr_control.html (external link) to remotely control the camera. Is this the same thing that the PocketWizard Remote Triggers does?

Thanks for all the help!

If you had the pocket wizard triggers, you could fire the flashes from the meter rather than using the trigger on the camera, whle metering. The meter module does nothing to the camera.

PocketWizard remotes are generally used to fire flash units via a radio frequency (RF) signal. The PocketWizard products are primarily used by professional photographers who need them a lot as they are very expensive. I've also heard that the production at PocketWizard is declining, apparently because there is now a lot of less expensive competition.

To answer what I put in bold text above: You don't need the PocketWizard transmitter in a light meter. As described in a post above, there are other ways to trigger your flash unit(s) when measuring light from them.

I also use a L 308s for my film cameras. Works well and I do not need any other features.
