They'd likely excel. unlikely, like most hobby photo guys, lots general gun guys have a hard time paying more for the glass than the rifle. Then you have the semi serious guys that will spend as much or a little more on the glass than the firearm. Then you have the guys that shooting and accuracy out too a 1000yards + is their all consuming lifes work and will not blink at dropping 3k or more on a rifle scope. Canon would be very hard pressed to unseat the Germans or Austrians from this market, Nikon is well established in the low to mid level sector of this as is a couple of other Japanese sourced glass manufacturers offering very similar performance to the germans for 1/2 the price, Namely Night Force and the upper echelons of the Vortex product lines .
