Actually, they probably actually should. They'd likely excel.

unlikely, like most hobby photo guys, lots general gun guys have a hard time paying more for the glass than the rifle. Then you have the semi serious guys that will spend as much or a little more on the glass than the firearm. Then you have the guys that shooting and accuracy out too a 1000yards + is their all consuming lifes work and will not blink at dropping 3k or more on a rifle scope. Canon would be very hard pressed to unseat the Germans or Austrians from this market, Nikon is well established in the low to mid level sector of this as is a couple of other Japanese sourced glass manufacturers offering very similar performance to the germans for 1/2 the price, Namely Night Force and the upper echelons of the Vortex product lines .

Even with Canons massive expierance in the optics manufacturing market in general they would have a very hard time breaking into the sporting optics market especially with their pricing strategies. I as both a gun guy and photo guy have no issues spending money on glass and understand the value of getting the best glass you can for the job at hand, but I know many in both areans that stick with the 150 dollar special that came in the 500 dollar rifle package, or Camera kit box. Why because they dont "see" the difference until its too late and the elk thats 100yd down the hill 20mins after sunset, and they cant get the shot with either tool, and I can see them plain as day still,
