My friend who works for Best Buy told me yesterday that the 5d mrk iii is now on their deleted items list. This would seem to back up the rumor of a 5d upgrade soon.

Unlikely. The 7DmkII took 5 years to be released. It has only been 2.3 years since the mkIII debut.

There will be a new cam, but this seems way too early.

The development timeline means nothing if Canon is planning to release new sensors. It's possible that they are ready to launch a modern manufacturing process or perhaps they will start using Sony sensors. Either way, three years is not too short.

6D2 and 5D4 will both be day-one purchases for me if they have great sensors.

Well, having been a Canon semipro shooter for a very long time, I have the feeling that timelines mean everything to Canon. Almost every new product has been for ca. 5 years in the pipeline, incl. R&D.

If Canon were to release a 5D4 so soon, it'd be a bit hasty. Maybe the D800/E/810 raised a few too many eyebrows.

I don't expect this to happen, save for one reason: Canon has given up developing their own sensors and is now eating the humble pie, seasoned with sensors made by Sony.

I still don't think we'll see a replacement till spring of 2016. Make it Fall if they release a firmware update giving it some 1dx features.

If you look at the timeline for Canon bodies (external link) it doesn't seem any timelines are set in stone but similar models do often have similar times between releases. The original pro-sumer bodies(D30-50D) mostly had had about 1.5yr between releases with the D60 & 40D only being 1yr. The xxD line started at 1.5yr then moved to 1yr then to what seems like whenever they feel like it. 1D was sort of all over the place but they tended to be around 2yr while the 1Ds seemed to just get longer between releases.

I'm not sure what you meant by 5yr in the pipeline but as it goes for the the 5D that we're talking about it has been about 3yr between releases and it's starting to get near 3yr since the 5DIII was released. The D800 came out just before the 5DIII with former winning in the sensor and later in pretty much everything else. The D810 is already released and now beats the 5DIII at pretty much everything so if Canon has something to answer to it, now's the time. I'd prefer they wait until they wait until they have something to meet/beat it. I think that they'll most likely release a high MP 1 series first(if they actually do) since many aren't happy with how they combined the 1 series, they could then sell a bunch of these to those that having been wanting a 1DsIV and those that can afford it but can't wait for the 5DIV. After that they could release the 5DIV around it's 3yr or so release time of previous models.

I could be totally wrong and we'll not see a high MP 1 series. In the case that Canon has something to answer to Nikon(including the sensor) maybe we'll see a 5DIV a bit early, but on the other hand we're long over due for a Rebel with a 70D sensor.

Spoke to my friend again. She verified the 5d mrk iii was on the deleted items list store wide and was to be replaced. With what she could not say. That info was not available. Doesnt seem that the 7d mrk ii would be that replacement but who knows.

An announcement late this year for a 2015 release would seem on schedule to me. Hands on samples at PMA.

Not a chance.

If Canon can't get the camera out in time for the holidays, they won't announce it this year.

Best case scenario (assuming the 5D4 will even be announced in the next 12 months) is an unveiling at CES.

A couple of considerations pointing to a 2015 announcement:

1. Look at the time between 5D II and 5D III announcements (3.5 years) - if that is any guide they'll announce the 5D IV in 2015.

2. In 2012 Nikon released the D800 and Canon released the 5D III. Yet already in 2014 Nikon has announced their successor (D810). So, Canon may need to get the 5D IV announced next year from a competition standpoint.

With the 5D3 already being near perfect, what would the 5D4 need to have to make it even better? I think >36MP and a new sensor are a must, and it has to be priced within reach of the D810, so $3.5K tops. Hopefully that will happen.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

The problem is that >36MP puts it in a slightly different area (landscape/studio rather than all rounder/sports). A 24MP sensor with Sony Exmor levels of DR would do me nicely (as long as the high ISO end didn't suffer).

That said, disk space and cards are cheap, so if they could keep performance levels high it wouldn't be a problem to have large MP - especially seeing how well the 24-70II does on an A7R (i.e. it would do a higher MP sensor justice).
